Bachelor Peter Christopher is getting pressured from his mother and his boss to get married. His solution is to have platonic friend Greta pretend to be his wife in a furnished apartment whenever he needs to entertain associates. Complications arise when his girlfriend crashes the party.

When a private detective finds Peter and Greta aren't married, he blackmails them.

Wally, Peter's rival at work, is trying to monopolize their boss' time to discuss an ad campaign. Meanwhile, Greta's boyfriend Bernie begins to view Peter as a rival.

Peter tries to obtain a letter of resignation from his boss before he reads it.

Peter and Greta look for an actor to play a minister after Peter's mother arranges a wedding.

Peter's relationship with his girlfriend becomes challenged after he is promoted.

Christopher is about to have a big date he's been planning for weeks, but his obnoxious boss comes by and drops off his more obnoxious kid niece. He must impose on Greta to help out, though now she has a date also that she must get around the precocious and treacherous brat.

Greta takes a secretarial job to pay for extra art lessons she desires. Meanwhile, Peter tries to avoid a dinner party given by his boss.

When Greta is hospitalized, Peter is forced to juggle his respective identities.

Peter pretends to successfully go to a marriage counselor to please his boss Mr. Brahms. When a co-worker needs help, Peter is in trouble when Mr. Brahms insists they all talk it over with the marriage counselor.

Mr. Brahms has an important if unusual assignment; to get the daughter of visiting friends from Dubuque a starring role in a Broadway play. She's only a kid and an untried, not very good actress either. Peter and Greta arrange an audition with a shady producer of beatnik art house plays.

Peter and Greta fear a lengthy jail sentence after having to file a joint tax return.

When Greta falls in love with a former Italian count, Peter knows their arrangement is over and tells his boss she has went missing- unleashing a suspicious detective.

Peter and Greta have to juggle two dinner parties at once.

Peter invests half-interest in Greta's start-up dress design business.

The lives of Peter and Greta become even more complicated when Ingrid, sister of Greta's boyfriend, falls in love with Peter. He must extricate himself from the situation before the Brahms find out.

A gypsy fortune teller (Rose Marie) insists Peter and Greta aren't really married. After a confrontation with Mr. Brahms, she plots revenge.

An important business account is threatened when Peter entertains the lovely female client and separately, Greta has over an important French designer.

After burning his bridges, Peter finds he needs his occasional wife in the small town of Barnaby where he has accepted a new job. When an angry Greta shows up, he has one too many.

Peter and Greta are obliged to compete with Wally and Vera Frick and his wife for membership in Brahms' club for his best salesman, "The Kangaroos". With membership comes advancement and salary increases, and the scheming Fricks will try anything to get it.

When an important client spots Peter at a romantic lunch with his new secretary, he assumes her to be his wife.

A road trip causes several problems for the pretend couple especially since it's to Greta's hometown. Peter and Greta frantically try to keep their secret while their boss Brahms becomes suspicious.

Peter regretfully becomes engaged to a wealthy, young heiress.

Thanks to Mr. Brahms, Peter instantly becomes a foster parent to a young Italian lady and begins to act fatherly toward her.

Peter is labeled as a "soft spot" by his boss after Wally manipulates efficiency experts at the office.

Peter and Greta are subjected to a government investigation after Mr. Brahms lands a government contract.

Peter and Greta are forced to find a pretend brother for Peter after covering up an incident to Mr. Brahms. When Peter's boss arranges for the brother to stay with Peter, the pretend couple tries to find a way to get rid of him.

Greta's boyfriend Bernie and his sister Bernice begin to suspect that Greta is having an affair with Mr. Brahms.

Peter and Mr. Brahms come to regret investing in an oil well.

Peter and Greta conspire on how to get Peter's mother to leave when she moves in.
