Paul and Barry deliver a safe to their gran, who likes Barry but refuses to speak to Paul. The safe is to house the famous Runnymede Ruby, which is to be exhibited to gran's guests. Barry locks the combination in the safe along with the ruby, but, when they eventually manage to get the safe open again, the ruby has disappeared.

In their quest to find the thief of the Runnymede Ruby the Chuckle Brothers find themselves at a cloth mill owned by one of gran's guests, Mr. Tatlock, though, bizarrely, it is in the nineteenth century and the mill workers are fascinated by the brothers' twenty-first century possessions. The brothers overhear Tatlock saying he has the ruby, but it turns out to be the Ruby, a new spinning loom.

Still hunting for the ruby, Paul and Barry stake out the flat of another guest, Carrington-Smythe, posing as flower sellers. They enter the flat in his absence but it is full of modern gadgetry, controlled by a panel, and they activate it all, as well as turning on the fire sprinklers. When Carrington-Smythe returns, he tells Barry and Paul that he is the head of MI7, and sends the brothers on a mission to locate the ruby,which has fallen into dangerous hands. The Chuckle Brothers are sent for training at an MI7 camp, giving directions to a motorist on the way. Soon after their arrival, a pompous government minister turns up, expecting a presentation,so the instructor, caught on the hop, plans to present him with a donkey, but the minister is allergic to animals and says he was expecting a marching band. The brothers directed his car to the wrong army base.

Carrington-Smythe sends Barry and Paul to a space station where eccentric Professor Rex Frimley lives in splendid isolation. He has invented a machine which can change the weather and it must not fall into the wrong hands. The professor is abducted by a woman called Maddy, who is after the whereabouts of the machine but before she drags him away he throws Paul and Barry some scraps of paper with clues written on them.

The brothers try to piece together the clues at the professor's house, following his diary entries to a huge satellite dish, where Barry is attacked by a man dressed as a bus conductor, who steals all the diary except one page. Back at Rex Frimley's house Barry sees a code written on the wall but it disappears again when the 216 bus, whose lights have caused it to appear, drives off.

The brothers locate the chip to activate the weather machine in the ice cream tray at a cinema run by No Slacking and discover that the Duke of Elstree is to pay the cinema a visit. They try to deliver a red carpet for the event and get thrown out, but have more success impersonating the duke and his man Spriggs, and eventually find the all-important chip.

Paul and Barry put the micro-chip and the second component vital to starting the machine into a safe deposit box. They now only need the mood chip and find it in a medallion around the neck of rap musician M.C. Ugly, whom they follow on his tour before Barry snatches it from him whilst being lowered onto the stage where he is performing. All the necessary parts are put into the deposit box but next day the brothers find that they have been stolen!

With the machine parts stolen the Chuckle Brothers search the professor's house to find ways to de-activate it but instead activate another machine which teleports matter, so that a cat's characteristics briefly transfer to Barry, who behaves in a very feline way, whilst Barry himself is turned into a spider for a morning.

Following all the clues that they have amassed the Chuckle Brothers are eventually able to find out where Maddy is hiding the professor. They are able to release the professor but Maddy herself escapes and they are still no nearer to finding out who was the accomplice who stole the Runnymede ruby from gran's house - or indeed the whereabouts of the ruby itself.

The Chuckle Brothers are about to leave the lair when they find their way barred by a sinister metal robot, the Liquidator 3, which pursues into an exhibition of Past and Future being organized by No Slacking, who attempts, unsuccessfully, to take on the robot in a sword dual. All is resolved for a happy ending when the robot finds his sweetheart, a lady robot, among the exhibits.

In exchange for a decoy ruby to flush out the thief Dan the Van gives Paul and Barry an antique lamp to sell at an auction hall with faulty lighting. The female electrician come to mend it is called Jeannie and the brothers assume that,since each time they rub the lamp she appears, that she is a genie. They squabble for ownership of the lamp before Jeannie explains the truth and buys it from them.

The Chuckle Brothers plan to flush out the ruby thief by giving a magic show at Gran's for all the suspects. Paul impersonates the Great Stomboli with Barry as his reluctant assistant. The show is a huge success - unlike the plan. The duplicate ruby is used in a trick but Maddy, disguised as a vicar, steals it and makes her escape, boasting that she will soon take over the world.

Maddy has left behind a sandal which Paul identifies as belonging to the monks of the Shoo-ing order, so the brothers arrive at the monastery and join the order. Maddy is ultimately revealed to be the leader of the monks but Barry challenges her to a dual of single combat, which she cannot refuse, and he tricks her into submission by forcing her to sneeze - the sign which always makes the monks throw people out of the window.

Maddy is led away by Carrington-Smythe's men but declares that the machine will still be activated, creating a new Ice Age and, when Gran tells Paul and Barry that she took the real ruby and gave it to Dan to look after, they realise that Maddy could be right - this was the one stolen from the magic show. They arrive at a funfair for a showdown with Murk, Maddy's henchman, whom they pursue across the rides, but they eventually deactivate the machine and save the world.
