Rene expands her firm and files suit for a deaf man. M.E. and Collier deal with Kelly's fear of taking care of the baby. M.E. worries that she and Collier are drifting apart. Young M.E. and Rene start high school.

Present: ME, incapacitated by back pain, believes a young boy across the street is being locked in his room and left alone for hours. Rene negotiates between a Cherokee artist's interpretative mural titled, "Holocaust: No More Forever" and the Holocaust Remembrance Committee who commissioned it. The actor Gary Paul Davis plays the artist, Charley Majors. Past: ME and Rene have boyfriend issues.

A disabled man seeks Rene's help when the state threatens to place him in an institution; and M.E. faces the severity of Alzheimer's disease with her father. In the past, Port Dixie is invaded by Rene and M.E.'s new high-school friends.

Rene takes on a lead factory which is poisoning local children; M.E. makes an effort to spend more time with Davis; young M.E. and Rene perform in a school play.

Present: A tornado ravages the Sims house while M.E. and Rene are trapped inside Rene's law office with a parolee. Past: Sara discovers that young Rene is dating an "older man".

Present: Rene fights for the rights of a homeless woman, while the newly homeless M.E. and Colliar search for shelter and comfort. Past: Unwelcome guests crash the girls' pajama party.

Rene provides legal and psychological counseling for Joe when he is sued for being a good samaritan. M.E. and Colliar look for an apartment.

M.E. and Colliar realize how much their lifestyle has changed when they move into a new apartment. Rene's long lost ex-husband comes to visit. Present: Rene and Turk have a spirited disagreement over potential candidates for a Girls At Risk scholarship before Turk finally gives in to Rene's choice; Past: "Bob Goodie's Dance Machine", a TV dance show, is coming to Birmingham and Teresa desperately wants to be one of the featured dancers on the show; in exchange for dance lessons from Rene, Teresa promises to support Rene's campaign to have a Black Studies curriculum at...

Present: M.E. and Colliar practice tough love with Kelly and Ajoni can't find a babysitter in order to attend a party. Rene defends the civil rights of the dead when an abused son doesn't want his abusive father buried next to his mother who was also abused by his father. Past: The kids experience the hippie subculture.

Present: As M.E. visits Fillmore to speak with Davis's teachers about his slipping grades in the aftermath of the tornado, she is caught in the middle of a school shooting; shocked and devastated by having to watch a student die in the gunfire, M.E. turns to food for comfort; after Rene suffers an arrhythmia while they're on a date, Turk insists that she see a cardiologist; on the strength of the article M.E. writes about the shooting, Glenn offers her a weekly column; Rene inspires her neighbor Muriel to take the positive step of creating an animal rescue ...

Present: M.E. writes about the importance of the Confederate flag , Rene represents nursing home residents , Rene & Turk deal with the next phrase of their relationship , Past : Rene & M. E. learn about feminism.

Present: Rene undergoes bypass surgery. M.E. discovers that Kelly and Ajoni are in debt. Past: Rene and M.E. endorse Robert Kennedy while Colliar and Tully endorse Nixon.

Present: Rene's painful recovery from her heart bypass surgery continues, while M.E. and Colliar deal with the growing faith of their son Davis. Past: Rene deals with embarrassing teenage heartbreak while her family hosts a visit from her mother's friend, Mrs. Scott. In the midst of Rene's personal loss, events change the world for everyone, and demonstrate for Rene what true loss really means.

Present: Rene after surgery returns to work is anxious. M.E. worries about her weight. Past: Rene explores the Black Panther group.

Glenn arranges for M.E. to witness the execution of a man convicted of rape and murder so that she can write a column about the emotional event.

Present: Emmet turns one, issues surrounding his race arise. Renee and Turk move their relationship forward while Rene works on a birth control case. Past: Collier gets in a car accident

M. E. ponders becoming involved in a class action lawsuit that has been filed against a comedy club. Rene confirms her commitment to Turk by proposing to him. Rene helps a young teen with divorced parents. Robert F. Kennedy is assassinated. Theresa learns disturbing facts about her ancestors when M. E. does a family tree for a school project.

Young Rene and M.E. have a party in the basement of Rene's house, and some of the boys get out of control in response to Rene's gift from her brother Elston, a dress with cutout windows that when Sara saw it earlier she forbids Rene from wearing it to the party. Present time, Turk's sister Rita Gail comes to town and takes control of everything around her, including a Terhune Family Wedding Ring.
