Cameron Brooks, writer, returns home after 28 years to write about his hometown. But the town has changed a lot since his return.

Wilma Henderson is an exemplary example of a teacher to students and her bosses. When Cameron and pal Arny discover she's seeing local lothario Harry McGil, she resigns. Cam convinces her to stay and deal with her situation.

The new doctor in town has sown distrust in his ability to do good because, as a kid, he wreaked havoc on the many townspeople who remember him.

Once a prominent name in the town's social registry, Vinia is now widowed and fallen on hard times. Her job as a chambermaid has her family convinced she has sunken below her station, but she feels complete in her new life.

Leonard wants to go to college. His father insists he stay home and take over the family business. Everyone seems to have an opinion. And Leonard becomes quite conflicted and confused.

Evelyn Ramsey, the editor's daughter, envisions a very romantic life for herself and her boyfriend, despite what any adults may think or do.

Cam teaches a young man how to spend money.

Cameron writes a chapter in his book about a day in the life of editor Lloyd Ramsey, particularly about the day Lloyd received a letter from a little boy wanting to know who started god.

Cameron finds the nervous young man who broke into his room hiding on the balcony. He learns it's Elroy's first robbery and it only got him $1.19. After talking with him, Cameron decides the would-be thief is just a confused youth deserving of a second chance.

On Christmas Eve, Cameron remembers an argument he had with his late wife concerning the butter churn she gave him as a Christmas present and how they subsequently made up and pledged to be together in spirit during the holidays even if they are separated. Cameron chances to meet Ludwig, his hotel's janitor, who is feeling depressed by his own feelings.
