Sandra is alone and missing Beryl. She's put an advert in the local Echo for a flatmate, and finally gets a call from a clumsy, brash girl called Carol. Sandra though, wants someone older, Carol's only 19 and she wants someone she can 'converse with'. That doesn't include Paul, who keeps pestering her.

Sandra's mother comes around, and gets introduced to Carol. She gives her the third degree, but declares that she 'can talk to her', and they get on strangely well. Sandra is on a new keep fit craze, but then gets a phone call - there's a family crisis and her mother has walked out again. Sandra and Carol trace her to a local hotel where they think she's having an affair.

Having been at the laundrette, Sandra drops most of the clean clothes on the pavement while running for the bus. She wishes they had their own washing machine. Sandra is worrying about getting old, she's bought face cream, vitamin pills and a yoga magazine. She then gets a visit from Carol's brother Lucian with bad news about his and Carol's Uncle Billy - he's dead.

Unfortunately he is not the man that she thought he was - he works for an abattoir - and when she gets home she finds that Carol only wanted her out of the house so that she could be alone with Paul.

Sandra has told Carol that she's now dating her ex, Bill, and she's not too happy about it. The two mothers find out though, and can't stop arguing. To try and keep the peace Sandra tells Bill not to phone her again. Carol goes and confesses, only the Father tells her that she must help them be together. To try and forget about Bill, Sandra decides to re-arrange the furniture. Carol manages to get Sandra and Bill together at a restaurant, but she gets a shock when Bill tells her that not only does he eat meat, he works at an abattoir! When she gets home though, she ...

The girls are off work, and it's sunny so Sandra convinces Carol to partake in some sunbathing. While Sandra is in the skimpiest bikini though, Carol is completely covered. After Carol convinces her that the sun is bad for your skin, making her cover up, Sandra gets told off for feeding the birds. They then get a nasty letter telling them to stop feeding the birds, or further action will be taken. So Sandra decides to complain about the complainers and fight back.

Carol hasn't seen her dad in five years, but she needs more money than she's got to try and find him. So, much to Sandra's disgust, she decides to enter the works beauty contest. Deciding that men should like them for their minds and not their bodies, Sandra decides to stop wearing makeup, much to Paul's disgust. Sandra gets a bit of a shock though, when Paul decides to 'dress down' as well. Sandra has to help Carol though, when her overnight fake tan goes very wrong!
