After Tango and Max were arrested for possession of marijuana, Laurie and Tango got into a quarrel, and Laurie slapped her. Adam confided in Nicole that the Whitneys are attempting to suppress an embezzlement scheme by Geraldine's brother Charles. Adam teased Vic about Laurie, which prompted Vic to phone her. Adam believes that Charles accidentally murdered Rosella Gray instead of his intended target, Jim Fields. Tango blackmailed Jonah over his real identity of Keith Whitney. Jonah laced Tango's drink with a hallucinogen.

Jonah smirked as his blackmailer Tango began to feel the effects of the hallucinogen he slipped her. Nancy admitted to Martha that Tango is a bad influence on Laurie, and Nancy detests her. Vic met with Laurie to convince her that Tango had set him up for a fight with Jonah. Nancy resolved to force Laurie into getting rid of Tango as a roommate or risk losing support from her parents. Jonah shoved Tango to her death out the window and closed it before admitting Nancy to the apartment, but one of Tango's shoes fell off. Anderson told Adam that two witnesses in the key maker's shop seem to support Jim's claim that Rosella had access to his apartment the night she was murdered. Jonah kicked himself for not seeing Tango's shoe and for closing the window, which he should have left opened. Laurie begged a reluctant Vic to help her convince her parents that Jonah isn't the type of person they believe him to be. Jonah lied to Nancy that he has been encouraging Laurie to move back home with them. Adam and Nicole advised Laurie not to be too hasty after graduating college and hold off on marriage. Bill Marceau and Lt. Anderson arrived to investigate Tango's death. Bill asked Laurie if Tango used drugs. Mike and Nancy returned to Laurie's apartment after hearing about Tango's accident. Nancy admitted that she had talked with Jonah at Laurie's apartment after 1 o'clock, and Tango wasn't there. Bill realized that a shoe on Laurie's dresser matched the one on Tango's foot. Bill's investigation uncovered Tango's real name, but he was saddened that Tango's parents didn't care whether she lived or died. Bill informed Mike that it's too early in the investigation to rule out the possibility that Tango's death wasn't an accident. Geraldine declined to attend Keith's memorial service and bristled over Colin's comments that Keith suspected Charles of embezzling from Geraldine's trust account. Tango's cause of death appeared to be accidental when the coroner's report verified that she was under the influence of psychedelic drugs when she fell.

Uncomfortable with being in the apartment alone after Tango's death, Laurie agreed to move back home. Nancy questioned Laurie about her relationship with Jonah. Laurie admitted that she and Jonah are "engaged to be engaged." Geraldine secretly phoned Keith and advised him to get back across the border to Mexico, but he shocked her by suggesting that he wants to come back to life. Bill confided to Martha that he's afraid Kate Sloane will do more than steal blood from the hospital once she's released from the county jail. Mike was delighted to learn that Jim no longer faces a trial for the murder of Rosella. Liz encouraged Jim to set a date for their wedding now that they're free to have a future with one another. Jonah boiled with suppressed anger when Nancy told Laurie about Jim being cleared of murder. Nancy was pleased that Jonah is soon leaving to go back to Atlanta. A vindictive Jonah gave Laurie a lingering, passionate kiss in front of a shocked Nancy, and then behind Laurie's back, he flashed Nancy a malevolent smirk.

At Greenhaven Sanitarium, doctors Reed and Warner were at loggerheads over Cookie's mental condition. Reed diagnosed Cookie as psychotic, but Warner insisted that she's a rational person who has been pushed too far by her husband's infidelity. Ron was distressed to learn from Dr. Reed that his tape recorder accidentally recorded Ron's confession to an affair with Tiffany, and Cookie despises him for it. Geraldine became incensed when Colin and Gordon discussed Keith's sadism. Colin recalled for his parents that Keith once locked him inside the tower at their summer ...

Laurie's 21st birthday arrived with a party, but Jonah couldn't celebrate with her out of fear that Jim might recognize him as Keith Whitney. Geraldine and Gordon had an argument about Keith's sanity, and Geraldine accidentally referred to Keith in the present tense. Geraldine misconstrued Gordon's comments about Keith's joy at killing, not realizing that he was talking about harming animals. When Gordon wouldn't stop comparing Keith to a monster, Geraldine screamed that Keith is still alive, which left Gordon speechless.

When Gordon was unable to accept her revelation about Keith being alive, Geraldine phoned him and let Gordon speak to his son. Keith apologized to Gordon for his indiscretions. Dr. Reed feared what might happen after he learned that Cookie has left the hospital. Laurie admitted to Nancy that Jonah's absence from her birthday party was a disappointment. Gordon wondered aloud about the possibility that Keith might have killed Suella and made it look like a suicide. A stunned Nancy learned from Dr. Reed that Cookie ran away from Greenhaven.

Dr. Reed and Dr. Warner realized that Cookie escaped through an open kitchen door at Greenhaven. Dr. Reed annoyed Dr. Warner with the suggestion that Cookie interpreted Dr. Warner's release as a rejection, and that's why she ran away. After getting an early release from jail, Kate Sloane visited Martha and attempted to convince her that the house is really haunted, and Kate tried to scare the Marceaus away for their own good. At the risk of being recognized as Keith, Jonah refused Laurie's request that he escort her to Liz and Jim's wedding. Jonah slipped up and referred to Jim by his old military nickname, Crazylegs. Laurie became upset when Jonah told her that he's going back to Atlanta, and it could be a permanent move. Kate clutched Martha's neck and began to strangle her. Just in the nick of time, Kate appeared to come out of the trance, allowing Martha to escape. Later, Kate insisted that she had been possessed by the spirit of the woman who haunts the house. Bill persuaded Adam to help him prove that Kate is faking the supernatural occurrences. Nancy went to Bill with her story about Tango's shoe, but Bill argued that her memory could be faulty, and the one she saw was probably different than the one Tango actually wore. Keith swore to Geraldine that he wasn't involved in the attack on Nancy, and he admitted that he met Laurie Karr a year ago at Colin's campaign rally. Gordon asked Colin and Tiffany to return to Monticello from Washington, but he didn't tell them the real reason. Nancy recounted her story about Jonah for Adam and Bill. Adam took the glass that Jonah had used to drug Nancy's drink. An eavesdropping Laurie heard Nancy claim that Jonah tried to kill her because she was getting close to uncovering his murder of Tango. Vic speculated that he had been drugged by Jonah the night he passed out at Adam's. Martha shared with Adam and Nicole her experience of seeing a man's face hidden in the back of her closet. After screaming at Nancy, Laurie refused to go home. Vic joined Laurie but left after objecting to her attitude toward her parents. Adam and Nicole went over Martha's house with a fine tooth comb and couldn't locate a hidden tape recorder. Alone in the house, Martha screamed in terror when the lights went out and a loud demonic laugh began to echo throughout the darkness.

A concerned Ron joined Colin and Tiffany in their return to Monticello. Ron was upset to receive word of the attack on Nancy's life and wasn't pleased with Geraldine's role in securing Cookie's early release from Greenhaven. Laurie finally went back to the Karr home and apologized to Nancy for behaving so immaturely. When someone spotted a man resembling Jonah in Georgia, Bill left to pursue the lead. Geraldine and Gordon stunned Colin and Tiffany with the news that reports of Keith's death a year ago were premature.

Colin and Tiffany couldn't believe their eyes when Keith reappeared from the dead. A terrified Martha wanted to spend the night with Mike and Nancy. Kate tried to talk her way out of it after Mike caught her spying through the window. Adam and Nicole saw unearthly lights inside the darkened Marceau home. While investigating the lights, Nicole vanished into the darkness.

Adam found Nicole who had fainted after someone touched her in the darkness. Kate insisted that Martha's house is haunted by a spirit that wants to possess the living. Adam discovered that the circuit breakers in the Marceau home had been tripped. Keith fumed when the family wondered how his return from the grave would affect Colin's political career. Martha wasn't comforted by the knowledge that Kate couldn't have pulled the trick on Adam and Nicole because she was at the Karr house at the same time.

Cookie decided she wanted to go home to Monticello. Keith argued that fiancée Stacy Kendall no longer has a place in his future plans. Mike agreed to find another place for Cookie to stay since has Laurie has moved back home and reclaimed her room. An angry Keith badgered Colin to not mention Suella's death to Ron. Ron was let in on Keith's return to the living. The family was stunned by Keith's announcement that he intends to pursue a political career.

Laurie expressed her distrust for all men to Nancy. Ron organized a press conference to announce Keith's return. Colin privately suggested to Ron that Keith is the same selfish man he always was. Ron learned from Nancy that Cookie is coming home, but he feared that Cookie will never forgive him for his affair with Tiffany. Nancy urged Ron to be patient with Cookie. Laurie and Nancy were stunned to learn that Keith Whitney is still alive.

A devastated Laurie refused to listen when Vic informed her that the police found traces of the drug Jonah used to lace Nancy's sherry. Vic tried to make Laurie realize that Jonah also drugged Tango and shoved her out the window to her death. Adam led a search of the Marceau basement for clue. A hidden Kate spied on Adam and Lt. Anderson. When the lights went out again, an icy hand touched Martha's face.

Keith crashed the press conference and managed to trick reporters. Nancy collected a depressed Cookie from the airport. Cookie was afraid to see Ron. Keith jokingly told Ron that his marriage to Suella had been annulled by the grim reaper. Later Keith panicked when Geraldine invited Laurie and Nancy to the Whitney mansion. Geraldine insisted to Keith that they have to know whether or not the Karrs will recognize any traces of Jonah in Keith.

Laurie accepted Geraldine's invitation. Cookie felt that she was being treated like a child in the Karr home. Mike told Nancy that Cookie needs more therapy. Jim and Liz returned from their honeymoon. Ron stopped by the Karr home to see Cookie, but she became enraged and slapped him in anger. Cookie swore she'd never go back to Ron. Nancy pleaded with Jim to get Cookie back into treatment.

Ron, Colin, and Tiffany speculated about Keith's political career and worried what his next newsworthy story could be. Nancy convinced Jim to take over Cookie's case from Dr. Lee, who went to England. Cookie swore to Jim that she would rather be committed to an asylum rather than owe Ron for her therapy treatments. Later Cookie showed Jim an old photograph of a woman that she is keeping inside her locket.

Martha received a phone call from Bill who hadn't uncovered any leads on Jonah's whereabouts. Jim listened as Cookie confided in him about the lady in her locket photograph. Adam attempted to get blueprints for the Marceau home, but was disappointed to learn they can't be found. Cookie decided she wants to live with Bill and Martha.

Nicole played devil's advocate with Adam about the possibility that supernatural forces could be at work in the Martha's house. Kate emerged from her basement hiding place and began to trash the Marceau home. Martha told Nancy that Cookie is welcome to stay in their guest room. Geraldine confirmed the cocktail party with Nancy. Martha wondered if Geraldine intends to match make for Laurie and Keith.

Nancy worried when Cookie claimed she would run away again if she can't live with Bill and Martha. Laurie admitted to Nancy that Keith made her uncomfortable once, and she's unsure about attending the cocktail party. Keith tried but failed to persuade his mother to cancel the cocktail party. Gordon chastised Geraldine for pushing her sons into politics. Laurie arrived at the Whitney mansion and told everyone that she knows Keith.

Laurie explained to everyone that she secretly met Keith a year earlier at Colin's campaign party. Martha took Cookie home where they found the mess Kate had made. Martha told Cookie there's speculation that the house is haunted. Geraldine proclaimed a truce between the Karr and Whitney families. Laurie admitted to Nancy that she doesn't particularly like Keith. Geraldine demanded that Keith resolve his engagement to Stacey.

Jim was stunned to read that Keith has returned from his presumed death. Bill suggested to Mike that Jonah Lockwood has simply vanished into thin. Cookie spotted Kate spying on them. Kate told a skeptical Martha that a poltergeist was responsible for household destruction. Jim didn't believe that Keith has changed. Kate suggested that the ghost haunting the Marceau house resembles Cookie.

Keith made a comment about Neil Davenport's untimely death. At Liz's urging, Jim phoned Keith and made a lunch date to talk about the good old days they spent together in military service. Keith pretended to be glad to hear from Jim but wasn't. Nancy feared that Kate Sloane's shenanigans in the Marceau house will upset an unstable Cookie. Ceila Burns visited Nancy and told her how important the antique locket is to Cookie.

Jim refused Liz's request that she go to his meeting with Keith. Tiffany expressed her doubts about Keith's honesty. Liz and Laurie spied on Jim's meeting with Keith at the restaurant. Laurie was jealous of Liz's newfound marital happiness. Jim's subtle digs about Suella Duval's suspicious deaths irritated Keith. Keith insinuated that Jim could lose his medical license if he makes trouble for Keith.

Cookie told Martha that she fears loneliness, not the dead. Nicole tried to talk marriage with Adam, but he pretended to fall asleep. Bill was upset to learn from Adam and Nicole about Kate playing tricks on Martha while he was away searching for Jonah Lockwood. Maniacal laughter woke Cookie from a sound sleep. Cookie nearly caught Kate running from the living room. Kate opened a secret passageway in the basement that led her to her husband Frank who isn't really dead.

Frank urged Kate to focus on scaring Martha since Bill is immune to tricks. Adam warned Nancy that Cookie shouldn't live with Bill and Martha as long as Kate Sloane is still on the loose. Mike theorized that Kate's tricks might be a way of her getting revenge on Bill for her husband Frank's death at the hands of the police a few years ago. Kate and Frank decided to exploit Cookie's mental problems and played a tape of maniacal laughter again. With her locket in hand, Cookie declared that she's not afraid of the laughing spirits.

Jim confided in Liz that Keith threatened him. Keith insisted to Geraldine that he has to threaten anyone who knows the secret about Suella. While talking with Geraldine, Keith accidentally revealed that he knows why Geraldine was forced to encourage Cookie's commitment. Martha contemplated asking Cookie to leave for her own safety. Jim was shocked when Cookie admitted that she's at peace with the spirits in Martha's house because the ghosts like her.

Nancy was bothered by Laurie's sudden lack of interest in life. Later Vic invited Laurie on a date. Martha told Nancy about Cookie's encounter with the "ghost" in the Marceau house, and they agreed it isn't a good atmosphere for her in her current state. After eavesdropping on Nancy talking with Martha, Cookie cried when she realized they want to send her somewhere else. Frank and Kate decided to scare Cookie into losing her mind since Bill and Martha will feel so guilty they'll leave the house.

When Ron suggested that voters won't easily forget Keith's former image of a reckless playboy, the two agreed that they have to build a newer conservative image. Keith joked that he intends to get to the White House before Colin. Colin told Ron that he and Keith are in a competition to please Geraldine. Stacey stunned Keith when she turned up at the Whitney mansion to lavish him with hugs and kisses.

Keith upset Stacey by trying to table talk of their marriage. Laurie insisted to her parents that she won't help Keith with his election campaign because she thinks he's still a playboy. Bill swore that he'd find a way to send Kate to jail. After Keith noticed her wearing an engagement ring, a tearful Stacey admitted that she's been engaged several times since she thought Keith was dead. Keith called Laurie and convinced her to accept a date with him. Geraldine slapped Keith's face when she discovered that he's pursuing Laurie.

Geraldine wasn't reassured by Keith's claims that Laurie would never recognize him as Jonah Lockwood. When Keith refused to obey her order to never see Laurie again, Geraldine threatened to ruin Keith's political career before it gets started. Ron admitted to Mike and Nancy that he's finding inconsistencies in Keith's claims. Keith gave in to Geraldine and broke his date with Laurie. Cookie told Bill that she's not afraid of anything in the Marceau home.

Ron urged Bill to kick Cookie out in hope that she might go back to him, but Bill feared that Cookie might herself if she's forced to return home with Ron. Cookie took off her wedding ring and vowed to never wear it again. Martha tried to comfort Cookie who sees herself as ugly and dull. After Martha asked Cookie to consider Ron's point of view, Cookie made an appointment with Adam. Adam was shocked when Cookie insisted he begin divorce proceedings against Ron.

Cookie argued with Adam that she wants to divorce Ron so that he can find a beautiful wife like Tiffany. Adam cautioned Cookie that she could be held for libel by continuing to spread rumors that Tiffany and Ron had an affair, but Cookie said that she could prove they were unfaithful together. Jim suggested that Liz sell an empty Claybank. Nancy approved of Laurie's date with Vic. Keith went behind Geraldine's back and tried to make a secret date with Laurie. Laurie wondered how Keith knew about Vic because the two are complete strangers.

Keith insisted to Laurie that Colin told him about Vic. Laurie admitted to Nancy that she's confused about her feelings toward Keith. Frank secretly spied on Martha and played more maniacal laughter to unnerve her. Keith broke the news to his parents that he has no intention of marrying Stacey. Geraldine worried that Keith thinks of Laurie when he envisions his perfect wife. Adam suggested that Marceaus hire a professional parapsychologist to disprove the existence of ghosts in their home. Bill caught Ceila Burns lurking outside his house.

Cookie's disappearance following her appointment with Adam unnerved Nancy. Ceila told Bill that she came to visit Cookie, who finally arrived. Cookie called Nancy and insinuated that Ron will be better off now. Frank watched the Marceaus with their guests through an air vent. Keith boldly interrupted Laurie and Vic's date. While talking about Jim, Keith accidentally referred to him as Crazylegs, an old military nickname. Later Laurie realized that Jonah had used the same nickname for Jim.

Jim told Liz about his much younger sister Didi, who was born after he left home. Adam and Nicole discussed the possibility that Ron could stop Cookie from divorcing him if he proves that she's not competent due to her psychological problems. Jim confided to Liz that he once analyzed Keith's psyche and was disturbed by what he found. Vic and Laurie tried to figure out how Jonah could've known about Jim's nickname in the Navy. Keith's gift to Jim and Liz also held a subtle warning.

Liz told Adam about Keith's veiled threats against Jim. Cookie announced her divorce plans to the Marceaus while a hidden Frank and Kate eavesdropped. Adam tipped off Jim that Cookie plans to file for divorce. Frank groused to Kate that none of her schemes have driven the Marceaus out of the house. Kate assured Frank that her next trick, involving an antique gown, will make believers out of everyone.

Cookie warned the Marceuas that she'll expose Tiffany to public scrutiny if Ron refuses to consent to a divorce. Martha wouldn't go along with Ron's plan to kick Cookie out so that she'll be forced to go home to him. Geraldine coaxed Colin into giving a public endorsement of Keith's political ambitions. Tiffany suggested that she talk to Cookie on Ron's behalf. Cookie told Martha that she's safe from Tiffany in the Marceau house and agreed to meet with Tiffany.

Tiffany failed to convince Cookie that Ron loves her. Cookie reiterated that she will name Tiffany as an adulteress in the divorce action if Ron insists on blocking the divorce. Laurie admitted to Mike that Jonah had knowledge of Jim's nickname. Nancy was annoyed to learn that Tiffany talked with Cookie, but Martha told her that Cookie was strangely calm and unemotional during the visit. After the Marceau house was plunged into darkness, Cookie spotted Kate coming down the stairs dressed in the antique gown and holding a candle.

Geraldine gave Keith good news after he met with party leaders to discuss backing for a congressional campaign. Liz feared for Jim's safety since he knows the Whitney family's darkest secret. Cookie fainted at the sight of Kate's eerie apparition. Adam theorized a scenario in which Keith stabbed Rosella by mistake in an attempt to stop Jim from telling anyone about the marriage between Keith and Suella Duval. Tiffany told the family about her visit with Cookie. Geraldine hoped that Keith might become changed man once he gets what he's wanted his whole life. Martha revived Cookie, who insisted that she wants to contact the spirit in the Marceau home.

When Bill and Martha advised Cookie that she saw a disguised Kate Sloane, Cookie insisted that the spectral figure was a real ghost. Martha realized that Cookie wants to believe in the supernatural. Tiffany reassured Colin that she loves only him and will continue to try and convince Cookie of it. Colin worried that Keith's political career will prompt more public scrutiny into their private lives. Keith asked Laurie out. Frank suggested stealing from Bill and Martha to get money.

Nicole didn't want Adam to tell Nancy that he thinks Keith could be a murderer. Jim worried Liz by stating that Keith isn't sane enough to be in public office. Hidden in the house, Kate heard Bill talking about having the police pick up Kate for questioning. A persistent Frank badgered Kate to steal while the Marceuas were out, but she worried that she'd be the first person suspected in the crime. Later Frank suggested that she only steal one small piece of jewelry at time, so that the theft wouldn't be immediately noticed. Colin insisted that Tiffany break the news to Ron that Cookie has started divorce proceedings. Kate swiped Cookie's beloved antique locket.

Laurie remembered that she had a prior date with Vic and would have to stand him up for her dinner with Keith. Nancy suggested that Laurie break her date with Keith instead. Geraldine admitted to Gordon that she forever wanted one of her sons to be president. Before Laurie could call him, Vic gave the play tickets for his date to Adam and Nicole. Vic was disappointed to learn that Laurie agreed to see him because she's going away with Keith to the Whitney country estate. An argument between Vic and Laurie escalated into passion.

Geraldine attempted to hide her tears from Gordon but couldn't conceal her pain when he praised Keith's newfound sincerity. Keith bragged to Colin about conquering sweet Laurie Ann Karr. Adam went against Nicole's advice and wanted to tell the Karrs his suspicions about Keith. Gordon confided in Colin that Geraldine now seems to fear Keith. Nicole told the Karrs that she thinks Adam is too involved to be objective about Keith. Keith faked a phone call to trick Laurie into staying on the summer house estate with him for supper. Geraldine informed Gordon that she decided to put a stop to Keith's political campaign. Laurie had another glimmer of recognition when Keith teased her for having never smoked pot. Celia visited Cookie at the Marceaus and was surprised by Cookie's insistence that she's better off with the spirits instead of Ron. Bill phoned Martha with the news about Keith. Bill suggested that despite Keith's death, Geraldine could be charged as an accessory to Keith's murders. Cookie failed to convince Ceila of supernatural activity in the Marceau home. Cookie's insistence that she feels happy and safe infuriated Frank, who eavesdropped from the basement. Frank decided that he'd have to get physical with Cookie, which bothered Kate. Celia warned Cookie that talking about a belief in ghosts could get her recommitted to the sanitarium. Kate feared that Frank might accidentally kill Cookie when he planned an accident for her.

Ron broke the news of Keith's death to Colin and Tiffany who were preparing to leave Monticello. Cookie implored the ghost to reappear. Ron went to visit Cookie and she inadvertently managed to trick him into admitting that her locket was actually a gift from Tiffany. Cookie warned Ron that the ghost could present a threat to him. The Marceaus arrived home and found an hysterical Cookie physically attacking Ron in anger over the locket.

Tiffany feared that Keith's crimes may have wrecked Colin's career, too. Geraldine continued to blame herself. Adam delivered news of Keith's death to Liz and Jim. Colin reassured Geraldine that she won't be prosecuted. Gordon railed against Geraldine for indulging herself in guilt while neglecting the rest of the family. When Ron called and suggested that a hysterical Cookie might try to hurt herself, Jim agreed to help her.

Bill and Martha admitted to Ron that they didn't want him to know about Cookie's newfound interest in the supernatural. Adam informed Vic that Keith had posed as Jonah, and Vic indirectly saved Laurie's life by exposing Jonah's trick of drugging sherry, which Laurie remembered. Jim advised Ron to leave the Marceau house. When the lights went out and the ghost reappeared on the stairs, Bill grabbed the figure, who turned out to be Cookie. Cookie stared ominously as if she were possessed.

Celia visited again and told Martha and Bill that she's disturbed by Cookie's interest in the occult. Laurie decided to get away from Monticello for a while, disappointing Vic. Martha informed Nancy about Cookie's violent outburst against Ron. Celia's husband Fred was bored with her stories until she mentioned the haunted Marceau house. Fred suggested that he knows someone who could help the Marceaus. Martha told Nancy that Cookie thinks the ghost is an ancestor. Cookie woke up and she stated that her name is Alexandra.

Bill revealed that he made up his mind whether or not to request that accessory charges be brought against Geraldine. Colin witnessed a tearful reconciliation between Geraldine and Tiffany, who admitted that Geraldine is like a mother to her. Geraldine learned that Bill recommended she be free of any criminal charges. Cookie awakened with no memory of being on the stairs. Nancy was disturbed when Cookie appeared delighted over the idea that the ghost possessed her body.

Nancy debated whether or not Cookie should be readmitted to Greenhaven for psychiatric treatment and Mike suggested that Jim make that call. Later Mike and Nancy discovered that Nancy and Cookie did have a Pollock ancestor named Alexandra. A drunken Ron was tempted by a girl he met in a bar. Jim insisted that he and Liz have a Christmas tree that is uniquely their own. One of Liz's Hillyer family ornaments fell and broke while trimming the tree. Liz received a telegram informing her that Orin and Julie had been seriously hurt in a plane crash.

As Bill and Martha prepared to visit the Karrs, Frank was ready to set his plan against Cookie in motion. Kate tried but failed to change Frank's mind about causing an accident for Cookie. Celia arrived at the Marceau house and said that her husband Fred wanted them to meet Simon Jessup, a professor of the occult. Laurie left for a vacation in the Caribbean. Adam and Nicole broke the news to Nancy about the Hillyer tragedy. Frank made Kate put on "Alexandra's" antique dress.

Mike asked Vic to spend Christmas Day with him and Nancy since Laurie has gone away. Adam referred to Julie Hillyer in the past tense. Colin made a televised speech about his commitment to the cause of mental illness but left his political career in the hands of the voters. Kate, dressed as Alexandra, slipped into Cookie's room and awakened her. Cookie followed Alexandra to the hallway by the stairs. Frank, hiding in the shadows, positioned himself to push Cookie down the staircase.

Cookie was saved when Celia and Fred arrived just as Frank prepared to push her down the stairs. Cookie flipped when Fred said that Simon Jessup could rid the Marceau house of spirits. Jim supported Professor Jessup's visit to the Marceau house as it might help Cookie's mental health. Colin's television speech proved a success. Ron insisted to Adam that he still wants a life with Cookie once she's normal again. At Jim's urging, Bill and Martha agreed to meet with Jessup. Celia arranged for Professor Jessup to visit the Marceaus. Liz received word that Julie died from the injuries she received in the plane crash.

Nancy talked with Jim about the possibility of forcing Cookie back into the sanitarium. Julie's death devastated Adam, but Mike reminded him that he gave her several more years of happiness when he cleared her of killing Harry Constable. Mike explained to Adam that Nancy and Cookie's ancestor Alexandra Pollock was a scarlet woman in the 18th century. A drunken Ron lamented to Nicole about failed marriages, and Adam spotted them together. Nicole was moved to tears by Ron's own depression.

Cookie declared that the spirit haunting the Marceau home is Alexandra Pollock. Jessup arrived and explained the scientific methods he uses to detect energies, but Bill remained skeptical. Nicole tried to discuss marriage, but Adam wanted to avoid the subject. As Frank and Kate eavesdropped, Jessup stated that his ability to uncover supernatural hoaxes, and then he felt Frank Sloane's presence.

Cookie softened her opinion of Professor Jessup when she realized that he might be able to summon Alexandra's spirit to return. Frank badgered Kate into another scheme to hurt Cookie. Bill invited Adam and Nicole to attend the séance Professor Jessup planned to hold. Kate dressed as Alexandra again and sneaked into Cookie's room. When Cookie awakened, she obeyed as Alexandra encouraged her to swallow a bottle of sleeping pills so that they could be together forever. Kate was caught by Bill when she attempted to sneak back to the basement.

Kate insisted to Bill that only the spirits helped her get back into the Marceau house. Adam and Vic discussed the subject of marriage, which Adam is avoiding because his parents were miserable. Despite Adam's negativity, Vic decided to propose to Laurie. Nancy worried about Ron who said that he's going to quit working for Colin. Kate told everyone that Cookie looked sick. Martha found an unconscious Cookie with an empty bottle of sleeping pills beside her.

Cookie's stomach was pumped, but Jim stated that the pills were too mild to be lethal. Ron vowed to stop fighting Cookie's divorce action and considered moving away from Monticello to start a new life alone. The Karrs received word of Cookie's overdose. Cookie regained consciousness and became upset when she was told that Kate had masqueraded as Alexandra. Later she realized she was being told the truth after Bill showed her the antique locket that Kate had stolen.

Bill persuaded Adam to take Kate's case so that there's no question of bias against her. Kate continued to insist that she acted alone in the haunting hoax. Jim advised Nancy to let Cookie stay with the Marceaus since forcing her to leave might exacerbate feelings of rejection. Nancy was relieved when Jim said that he didn't think Cookie would be a suicide risk. Liz phoned Jim from Italy to say that she's coming home but wants to bring her father back to stay.

Ron watched over Cookie, and as she slept, he promised to give her a divorce even though he still loves her. Martha told Professor Jessup that he won't be needed since Kate has admitted to faking the haunting, but Jessup advised her that a real spirit might actually exist. Adam became jealous when he spotted Nicole and Ron getting chummy. Cookie grew upset over Jessup leaving because she thinks the spirit of Alexandra is angry.

Bill and Adam discussed Kate's defense, and Bill agreed to drop her larceny charges. Hidden in the basement, Frank wondered how long he'd have to go without food and liquor with Kate jailed. The Marceaus agreed to let Professor Jessup hold a séance since it might convince Cookie that no spirits exist in the house. Nicole refused to tell Adam her New Years resolution, though she admitted it concerns them both. During the séance, Professor Jessup beckoned the spirit to appear. Cookie fell into a trance and declared herself the spirit of Alexandra Pollock.
