When tough Billy Howlett is brought into custody PC Wishaw goads him into violence. DS Wakefield arrests Mel's lodger and then comes to the flat for a search. Finding drugs he allows Mel to think he wants a sordid trade off.

Roy and Dean are on the trail of a youth who has jumped bail. When they apprehend him a troubled Dean discharges a CS gas canister. Mel becomes friendly with a community leader on the Skeetesmore, leading to friction between her and Jaz.

Danny must face a psychiatric assessment to determine if he is fit to continue in the job. Mike learns that Kelly is using heroin and that she is neglecting her baby. Mike and Colin disagree over what action to take regarding a drunk.

Teenage addict Debbie Sharpe suffers a fatal overdose and Sergeant Giffin resolves to bring in Terry Reynolds, the man who supplied the drugs,despite not having authorization from his superiors.A quantity of heroin is found at Reynolds' home after a raid but there is frustration when his solicitor manages to get him bailed. Mel is called out to deal with a complaint from a woman who has some anti-social neighbours. She then learns that a member of this problem family is a convicted sex-offender who is seeing a fourteen-year-old girl.

Mike Reynolds becomes annoyed with over-zealous rookie PC Kennett and handcuffs her to some railings.She however doesn't see the funny side especially when two lads come along and begin making fun of her and take her baton. Mel is caught on the hop when she is already present at Terry Reynolds' home as it is being vandalised when the police response arrives. She then learns that her boyfriend Darrell has taken information that she gave him and twisted it in order to provoke anger against Reynolds and lead to action being taken to improve the situation on the Skeetesmore. Sharon Reynolds is raped by two of the Caffrey brothers but she is reluctant to co-operate with the police.Mel confronts Darrell over his actions and breaks off their relationship.
