With 520 miles of shoreline and absolutely no coastal protection, the big question facing New York City is whether one of the world's greatest cities can defend itself against rising seas and the next big storm.

One of the world's most populous cities has the world's largest problems. From typhoons and tsunamis, to earthquakes, storm surges, and sinking neighborhoods, Tokyo must find new ways of fighting back against the rising waters.

For decades, London trusted that its sophisticated Thames Barrier would keep it safe from water. But as sea levels rise and rainfall increases, London's sleeping giant is no longer enough to keep the city safe.

No city on Earth faces a greater threat from rising seas and violent storms than Miami. But as development booms, residents of Miami wonder if engineers and planners can protect them from the water.
