Responding to an early morning call reporting a family dispute Officer Jim Street and his partner fall prey to an ambush by three gunmen. It is just one in a series of ambushes which have plagued the police. In the aftermath of the shooting Street's partner is dead and he tries out for an opening in a newly formed S.W.A.T. unit being headed by Lt. 'Hondo' Harrelson. The teams first assignment is to find and stop the gunmen who have declared war on the city's police.

A prisoner is broken out of the prison ward of County General Hospital. His name is Joey Hopper and his followers are referred to as the Hopper Family. The 'family' consists of alienated youths who view Joey Hopper as their spiritual leader. All escape routes out of the city have been closed And SWAT's job is to conduct a sweep of the city and find them. Hopper's goal is to exact revenge against all those who prosecuted him...including 'Hondo' Harrelson.

Frank Thomas is the 3rd victim of a sniper shooting in the last year. SWAT begins investigating by looking for a common link between the victims. They discover that two of the men dated the same woman...Janet Warren. Harrelson's plan puts Jim Street undercover as her new boyfriend in an attempt to draw out the sniper.

Meredith Cooper is a freelance writer sent by the PR department to do a piece on S.W.A.T. for a magazine. She is anti-police and thinks they are a necessary evil but more evil than necessary. Harrelson and the team are told to cooperate and give her what she wants...human interest stories. While she is with them they respond to an APB on a missing girl which may be a kidnapping.

Vincent Ritchie is a drug dealer who has agreed to testify against his former associates. While being escorted into town there is an ambush and during the gunfight he is shot and severely wounded. His future safety is now in the hands of S.W.A.T. The team sets up around the clock surveillance in the hospital wing while the gunmen make plans to hit.

Bo Pritchard, Hondo's Vietnam buddy, is determined to replaced Deke on Hondo's team. When Deke is wounded, Pritchard gets his chance, put Hondo must make a tough decision when his old friend's reckless behavior puts the team in danger.

Posing as terrorists seeking freedom for their comrades, a group of thugs take an entire pro basketball team hostage during a game. They aren't terrorists, they just hope to extort $2 million from the team's owner.

The team's mission to stop the assassination of a U.S. Senator becomes even more urgent when it's learned the killer hired for the job is carrying a deadly plague that could start an epidemic.

Thugs hijack an armored car and hide it somewhere in Los Angeles. S.W.A.T. borrows another armored car and tries to penetrate it for practice, but can't do it. The stolen car had no money inside, so S.W.A.T. assumes it will be used in a future heist. But where? A national beauty pageant with a million dollars in prizes provides the answer.

A student protest is a cover for radicals to infiltrate a chemical plant and demand a million-dollar ransom. S.W.A.T. has only a short time to sneak in, rescue the hostages, and deactivate the programmed explosion.

Harrelson is shot although he survives, his vision is in question. So until he can be cleared he is assigned to a desk job.

A gang of ex-convicts, led by their former parole officer, utilizing his familiarity with S.W.A.T. procedures, invades a heavily guarded rare coin auction and makes off with two million dollars is gold in "Sole Survivor."
