When their daughter Allison locks herself in the bathroom on her wedding day, her affluent parents call in the building Super, unwittingly reuniting the former flames.

In stark contrast with her own family's avoidance of difficult matters, Allison is impressed with a loud yet honest discussion between Eamon and Finn. She encourages candor at home, but discovers that the "truth hurts".

Effie invites Finn up for cocktails so all the parents can get better acquainted. Despite having little in common, Finn repays the courtesy The evening is ruined by an accusation, subsequently exposing past jealousies and class distinction.

Nicholas collapses and is diagnosed as suffering from stress. A meter detects Allison and Eamon's relationship and Nicky's slacker ways to have the strongest effect. Nicholas decides to get to know Eamon better, and push Nicky to discuss career goals.

Allison gives Finn an expensive birthday gift, which provokes a fight with Eamon. Nicholas schemes to get Allison back together with her former fiance Howard, and takes advantage of the rift between lovers.

When Effie's escort cancels, she takes Finn to the opera at the last minute. He creates a persona to impress Effie's friends, which snowballs to gossip column rumors of troubles in the Conklin marriage. Effie becomes infuriated by Nicholas's lack of concern.
