Global warming has led to the melting of the polar ice caps. Sea levels have risen dramatically, with devastating effects. Survivors Richard and Amy Webber of environmental pressure group Greenwatch are teaching children the skills they will need to help restore the damaged planet.

Richard and Amy Webber are arrested, leaving their children, Greg and Karen, and students Ash and Mai-Li to fend for themselves. They seek out Goodman, an old friend of the Webbers, who is operating from a laboratory within a derelict mill. When Goodman becomes ill, the children decide to return to the school to get medicine.

At the Commission Headquarters, evil Kurt Glemser interrogates Amy Webber in an attempt to locate the missing 'sender' children. She tries to send a warning message to Mai-Li through telekinesis.

A ruthless farmer is using refugees as slave labour. A disease breaks out on the farm.

The children respond to a distress call from Loppergarth Island, and discover the village deserted except for Gemma, a ten-year-old girl who is in shock and afraid to go to sleep.

The children run out of fuel and have to moor on the nearest island. They discover a museum dedicated to the time before the floods, run by a strange old woman called Polly Phemus.

Ash and Greg travel to the Cartmel scrap market for a fuel pump, but the price is too high. The boys decide to try their luck at a haunted scrapyard on Devil's Island.

Joshua, a young 'sender', goes missing while under Commission escort. Dr. Galina Renkova has programmed the boy with a virus engineered to make the telepaths destroy one another.

Greg sets off to replenish the group's supplies of sunblock, and meets Siren, a mysterious brunette. He is soon caught up in the activities of a sinister cult determined to stop people from 'interfering' with nature.

The children respond to a morse code message. On Paradise Island they discover Hepzibah McKinley, a scientist who claims to have discovered the secret of cold fusion, creating clean energy from water.

Greg and Mai-Li see an empty dinghy drifting in the sea and go to investigate. Greg wakes in a house, and a pretty girl called Marianne tells him that he was found floating alone in the sea. Meanwhile, her father, Professor Petersen, plans to sacrifice Mai-Li in an attempt to cure his daughter of a rapid-ageing disease.

Goodman takes Ash to the Cartmel scrap market for some video spares. Ash meets Luke, another 'sender', and falls in with Skylar, a criminal who gets young telepaths to steal for him and who provides them with Tags, chemical strips that enhance their telepathic abilities.

Amy Webber escapes from Commission HQ and makes her way to the Greenwatch base. She seems to be more concerned about the whereabouts of the two 'senders' than her own children.
