When the Danish politician Jens Otto Krag and the famous film star Helle Virkner become a couple, it is the love story of the century. Jens Otto Krag was a political talent who wanted to change the poor Denmark he grew up in. Helle Virkner was a young ambitious actress who was forced to navigate a world ruled by men. When they meet, it changes both their and the Danes' lives.

Things are going well in Denmark, and the welfare state as we know it is taking shape. As Minister of Foreign Affairs, Jens Otto Krag has a lot to see at a time when both East and West are rapidly rearming. In Frederiksberg, Helle Virkner and Jens Otto Krag are trying to create the nuclear family they both dream of. But it requires hard work. Because how do you make ends meet when you have to make time for family life, career and love in an everyday life in the public eye?

The rhetoric is getting tougher between East and West and the rearmament continues. Denmark prepares for nuclear war, but when Prime Minister Viggo Kampman's health fails, Jens Otto Krag faces his greatest challenge. Helle Virkner discovers that her new big role will be as the prime minister's wife.

Jens Otto Krag has lost the post of Prime Minister, but that is not the only thing that is slipping out of his hands. The marriage with Helle Virkner is also cracking. Helle Virkner prepares for a life after Krag and resumes her acting career while Krag tries to regain power and make his last mark as a statesman.
