Berlin after the First World War: The capital of the young republic sinks into poverty, violence and chaos. Right in the middle, the world-famous department store of the west tries to assert itself as an oasis of luxury and beauty.

The young saleswoman Hedi would like to use her chance as a mannequin for the KaDeWe fashion catalogue. She dreams of a better life and enjoys a boisterous evening with Fritzi in the hip nightclub "Eldorado".

In Berlin inflation is galloping, the workforce is starving and the department store of the west is struggling to survive. Despite the uncertainty and worries, the world shines in sensual colours for the young KaDeWe saleswoman Hedi.

KaDeWe junior boss Harry Jandorf is endangering the department store of the west with his drug excesses. His father Adolf puts the accountant Georg at his side as an authorised signatory and watchdog to prevent ruinous solo efforts.

The big ones swallow the small ones - KaDeWe founder Adolf Jandorf had no choice: either sell immediately or close down soon. With a heavy heart, he gives the order to give up the independence of the family business.

The National Socialists' seizure of power casts its shadow: There are no loans for "Jewish" companies like the Kaufhaus des Westens. Harry Jandorf and Georg, who run the glamorous luxury department store of the new owner Tietz, are played off against each other. Ironically, Harry's faithful confidant receives an offer that threatens to destroy the friendship between the two. In view of the escalating anti-Semitism, the pressure on the Jandorfs is increasing.
