A family return to England after a holiday in France and discover a refugee in the boot of their car. Sami has fled Syria but has become separated from his family. The English family take pity on him and try to help him contact his wife.

Now that Sami is an official asylum-seeker, Katy is determined that he should stay with them for as long as he needs to. John rearranges the spare room to make it just like Damascus. Sami introduces his new British friend Raj.

Sami is settling in and has finally made contact with his family, who are now safe and living with a lovely couple in Berlin. John is having a tough time at school and Peter has his worst prejudices about Sami confirmed.

Sami anxiously waits for his substantive interview at the Home Office. To take his mind off that Katy gets him to do a talk at school which turns into an opportunity for Sami to make some money.

Things are tense between Sami and his wife, who has claimed asylum in Germany. Sami joins the black economy as a tutor but gets more than he bargained for. The German couple visit to persuade Sami to join his family.

With the day of his substantive interview fast approaching, Sami is desperate to make a good impression. But is Britain actually where his heart lies? Should he go to Berlin instead, to be with his family?
