The Poppenkraam has been remodeled during the summer holiday. Farmer Harms asks Hugo & Krengetje to help him look for his missing scarecrow, Pitjewiet. Meanwhile the man of straw himself is looking for a heart and some courage. Instead he meets a posh woman named Josephine.

Hugo introduces his 'niece' Annemarie to Krengetje and Josephine. When he begins to brag about all the different countries he has visited in his dreams, the three girls decide to teach him a lesson. Annemarie dresses up as a Russian, Krengetje as an Arabian and Josephine as a fortune teller. But when an army officer visits the store, Josephine falls head over heels in love with him.

Pitjewiet comes round to ask Hugo for a job. But the scarecrow takes a nap after dusting down just four toys. At that moment a thief called Pieter Lepeltak arrives and proceeds to take Pitje's stuffing.

It's the anniversary of Hugo & Henriëte's growing to full size, so together with Pitjewiet they decide to have a birthday party. A magician comes round and sells a box of magic tricks to all three of them.
