After growing up in a foundling home, Victoria Winters receives an offer to work as governess in the small coastal fishing village Collinsport, Maine.

Victoria meets the Collins family. Roger Collins is disturbed to learn that Burke Devlin is back in town.

Carolyn Stoddard shows Victoria around the house. Burke offers Joe Haskell money in exchange for information about the Collins family.

Victoria is upset when Roger's questions about Burke Devlin turn into accusations against her. Later that night, Victoria hears a strange cry and meets an unfriendly David Collins.

Victoria prepares to leave. She tells Carolyn of the few clues she has to the mystery of her parentage. On Widows' Hill, Sam Evans tells Victoria the story of Josette Collins.

The caretaker Matthew Morgan accuses Vicki of snooping. Vicki wonders if her unexpected job offer at Collinwood has any connection to her past at the orphanage.

Roger questions alcoholic painter, Sam Evans, about Burke Devlin. Sam agrees with Roger's theory that Burke has returned for revenge.

Carolyn receives a marriage proposal from Joe Haskell. Victoria believes she has caught Mrs. Collins-Stoddard in a lie.

Carolyn tells Vicki the legend of Widows' Hill. It's revealed that Burke Devlin was sent to prison ten years ago. Carolyn is fascinated by the charming and dangerous Burke.

Carolyn meets Burke at his hotel, and he misleads her into believing that he is only stopping in Collinsport for a few days. David overhears his father saying he should be put in an institution.

After a ten year absence, Burke Devlin visits Collinwood.

Roger explains how Widows' Hill got its name. Sam is distressed, but won't tell Maggie what is troubling him.

Burke was convicted of manslaughter on Roger's testimony. He denies wanting revenge, but Liz and Roger are skeptical. Meanwhile, Vicki questions Matthew.

David tries to hide something in Vicki's room. Victoria tries to be friends with David. At the Blue Whale, Carolyn invites Burke to join her and Joe at their table.

Roger plans to meet Burke at the Blue Whale. David is convinced that his father hates him. Liz receives a phone call with some upsetting news for the Collins family.

While waiting for Roger to arrive at The Blue Whale, Burke flirts with Caroyln, much to Joe's chagrin. Meanwhile, Elizabeth becomes convinced that Burke was responsible for Roger's car accident.

David seems upset that his father survived the accident. Roger blames Burke after learning his brakes were tampered with.

Victoria tells Roger she saw Burke Devlin near the car with a wrench in his hand. Meanwhile David fears his father will go to the police.

Malloy interrogates Sam over the whereabouts of Burke Devlin and Carolyn. Meanwhile, Elizabeth eagerly awaits Carolyn's return home.

Roger accuses Burke of tampering with his car.

Vicky and Carolyn become convinced the Burke did not cause Roger's accident. Bill Malloy is suspicious about Burke hiring a private detective Wilbur Strake to investigate the Collins family before Burke arrives in town.

Upon learning that Sam Evans leaves town on a regular basis, Burke Devlin offers Sam $1000 to have a portrait of himself painted in an effort to keep Sam Evans in Collinsport.

With looming suspicions that Burke tried to kill him, Roger finally decides to involve the police, though the investigation doesn't bode well with young David.

Burke is being interrogated about Roger's car accident by the constable in the Collinsport Inn. Joe discusses his plans to Carolyn about getting his own boat.

David tries to get a hold of Vicki's letter from the foundling home, thinking it may have some damaging information about him. Vicki becomes suspicious of David after she catches him reading technical magazines.

David has a struggle with Vicky in her bedroom, and then Vicky speaks to Liz in the drawing room to explain why. Roger threatens to see the sheriff doesn't get re-elected if he doesn't have Burke Devlin put behind bars.

David disappears from Collinwood. Burke is in Bangor in a private meeting with Stuart Bronson to gather information about all of the Collins family's assets and liabilities.

Burke is angry at the sheriff for conducting a search in his Collinsport hotel suite while he's been out of town. Maggie finds David in the restaurant and tries to hold him until Roger arrives.

David spends some time with Burke in his hotel suite, after hiding out from Roger Collins. As the storm approaches Collinwood, Liz is worried about David and blames Vicki for his actions.

Burke gives David a ride home. In Collinwood, Roger scorns David for running away and also, he searches David and interrogates him about the bleeder valve.

Burke attempts to protect David, but later warns Victoria in private to beware of the child.

When the sheriff questions Elizabeth about David, she tries to protect her nephew.

After Carolyn rejects his marriage proposal, Joe shows up at Collinwood drunk. Victoria meets Burke at the Blue Whale.

Responding to Victoria's story about her past, Burke shows her the report his detective has furnished.

Sam tries to get out of painting Burke's portrait. Carolyn becomes jealous of Victoria.

Roger demands that Sam cancel painting Burke's portrait. Elizabeth begs Victoria to stay at Collinwood.

Sam gives Maggie a letter to keep. Roger admits he has heard sobbing coming from the basement.

Matthew threatens to kill Burke. Carolyn leaves her ring for Burke to find and return to her.

Bill Malloy informs Burke that if Burke will leave town, he'll do his best to help clear him.

Carolyn follows Burke to Bangor. While drunk, Sam makes a damaging admission to Bill.

Maggie is unable to learn what is troubling Sam. Torn by his conscience, Sam comes to Collinwood.

Burke confers with James Blair about taking control of everything the Collinses own.

Bill admits he would do anything to protect Elizabeth. He suspects Sam has some special knowledge.

Elizabeth learns that Burke has made a move to take over the Collins family financial holdings.

Bill sets up a meeting to clear Burke of the manslaughter charge and place guilt on someone else.

Bill issues a demand to Roger and Sam that they meet him at 11:00 p.m. in Roger's office.

Burke, Sam and Roger wait in Roger's office for Bill to arrive. They leave after an hour.

David receives a crystal ball as a gift from Burke. David consults the ball to learn about Bill's disappearance.

Everyone in Collinsport is concerned about the unexplained disappearance of Bill.

At Widows' Hill, Victoria screams as she sees a dead body laying on the rocks below the cliff.

At Elizabeth's request, Matthew investigates Widow's Hill but reports he found no body, only seaweed.

Victoria and Carolyn are terrified by strange noises at Collinwood. Sam makes a promise to Maggie.

David tells Victoria that ghosts are all around them. Matthew makes a startling admission.

Sheriff Patterson questions Matthew about Bill. Elizabeth is horrified that Bill may have been murdered.

Roger is interrogated by the sheriff. He denies knowing the purpose of the meeting in which Bill never arrived.

Roger insists to Sam it is imperative that the two of them must stick to their original stories.

Burke is eager to learn who was responsible for Bill's fate. The sheriff makes a revelation involving Bill.

The sheriff questions Sam. David studies tidal charts to learn more about Bill's disappearance.

Elizabeth is queried by the sheriff. David listens as Roger makes a false confession to Elizabeth.

Victoria visits Maggie and Sam for dinner. She finds an old painting that closely resembles her.

Burke invites himself for dinner at the Evanses and tells Victoria of the events leading up to his manslaughter charge ten years earlier.

Roger questions Victoria about her dinner with Maggie and Sam. Sam denies to Burke that he killed Bill.

Maggie comes to Collinwood to confront Elizabeth. Matthew vows to protect Elizabeth.

Matthew issues a warning to Burke. The sheriff orders Burke to stay away from Collinwood.

Burke intends to settle his accounts at Collinwood. Roger and Sam threaten each other.

Burke attempts to prove Roger killed Bill. Victoria admits she is not sure what time Roger left for the meeting.

Burke tells Carolyn he was wrongly convicted and that Roger is guilty of the manslaughter.

David tells Victoria his parents used to fight and argue about Burke. Roger tries to be friendly to Victoria.

Burke suggests to Bill's housekeeper, Mrs. Johnson, that they work together to find Bill's murderer.

David and Victoria visit the Old House on the Collinwood estate and see the portrait of Josette Collins.

After touring the Collins cannery with Roger, Victoria visits the sheriff and repeats her story to him.

Carolyn suggests to Elizabeth that Bill Malloy's former housekeeper, Mrs. Johnson, work at Collinwood.

Sheriff Patterson informs Elizabeth that the coroner ruled Bill's death an accidental drowning.

Roger is ecstatic over the coroner's report, but Burke angrily insists that Bill was murdered.

On Lookout Point above the ocean, Victoria finds the missing fountain pen that Burke gave to Carolyn.

Elizabeth vows to fight Burke after he declares that he intends to take control of the Collins family holdings.

David finds he is unable to choose between Elizabeth and Burke. David and Carolyn argue about Burke.

Maggie and Joe enjoy each other's company at the Blue Whale. Roger quarrels with Sam and with Joe.

As part of a scheme, Mrs. Johnson pretends to accuse Burke of being responsible for Bill's death.

Roger is terrified when he learns Victoria found the fountain pen that he lost at Lookout Point.

Matthew expresses his hostility to Burke. Elizabeth offers Mrs. Johnson a job at Collinwood.

Burke realizes Roger lost the pen at Lookout Point. Roger takes the pen from David's room.

Roger buries the pen, then defends David when Victoria accuses the boy of stealing it.

Luring her to a closed-off wing of Collinwood, David locks Victoria in an isolated room.

Sam and Burke get drunk and discuss ghosts at Collinwood. The ghost of Bill Malloy appears.

Burke and Carolyn enjoy a flirtatious date. Victoria attempts to escape from the locked room.

Victoria hysterically recounts how she saw the ghost of Bill Malloy after she is freed from the room.

In the locked room, Elizabeth and Roger discover seaweed on the floor where Victoria saw Bill's ghost.

Collins Enterprise employees are offered better jobs by Burke if they come to work for him instead.

When David learns Victoria saw a ghost, he begs her to stay. Victoria finds a possible clue to her identity.

Burke drives Victoria to Bangor and again warns her that she should leave Collinwood for good.

In Bangor, Victoria questions Collins family lawyers Richard and Frank Garner, a father and son team.

Roger and Elizabeth fret about Victoria's visit to Bangor with Burke. David draws a picture of Bill's ghost that unnerves his father. Elizabeth offers Carolyn motherly counsel and reveals the true love of her life and how she lost him.

Frank Garner promises to help Victoria uncover her background. Carolyn and Joe attempt a reconciliation. Sam is unsettled to learn the Ghost of Bill Malloy appeared to Victoria.

Romance buds in Bangor between Victoria and Frank Garner. When Victoria learns the filigree fountain pen she found was Burke's, she concludes he was involved in Bill Malloy's death. Afraid to be with Burke, she calls Roger for a ride home.

On the way back from Bangor, Roger's car stalls and he and Victoria take shelter during a storm.

Elizabeth reprimands Victoria for questioning the family lawyers about her background. Sam Evans gives Vicki his portrait painting of Betty Hanscom, and the resemblance unsettles Roger and Elizabeth.

Mrs. Johnson comes to work at Collinwood and investigates sobbing coming from the basement.

Mrs. Johnson suggests to Burke that Collinwood is haunted.

Victoria makes a revelation to Burke about the pen. Carolyn tells Roger that Victoria knows about the pen.

Victoria agrees to visit the Old House with David. She tells Maggie she knows who killed Bill.

Roger makes a frightening confession to Victoria regarding the death of Bill.

Victoria is terrified when Roger confronts her about a lie she made involving him.

Roger admits to Elizabeth that Victoria has dangerous knowledge. Victoria is nearly hit by a car.

The sheriff and Burke witness Roger tampering with evidence in the death of Bill.

The sheriff checks Roger's alibi for the hit-and-run accident and makes a discovery.

While Victoria searches outside the Old House on the estate, an urn falls from the roof.

Matthew admits to Victoria that he was responsible for a murder and may have to kill her.

Matthew explains the murder he committed was accidental and he only meant to scare Victoria.

Matthew discloses his secret to a startled Elizabeth. He takes refuge in the Old House.

David suspects Burke has been meeting with Mrs. Johnson, adding they all possess a hatred for Roger. David offers to help the fugitive Matthew, who reluctantly decides he has no choice but to trust the boy.

Victoria tries to convince a disbelieving Burke that Roger had nothing to do with the death of Bill Malloy. Burke calls Elizabeth to gloat over his new business acquisition.

Matthew counsels David on how to deceive people by playing dumb. Victoria loses her wallet at the Old House and returns to retrieve it, not knowing Matthew lurks within.

Matthew cannot bring himself to kill Victoria, but informs her that she must die.

Burke learns about Victoria's disappearance and that she did not go to Bangor as planned.

Joe and Burke search the Old House while Matthew holds Victoria captive in a secret room.

Joe tells Carolyn that their relationship is over. Elizabeth vows to defeat Burke's plan.

David brings food and cigarettes to Matthew and almost discovers the hidden Victoria.

David begins to feel guilty about helping Matthew, who realizes he may not be able to trust David.

Matthew hears a ghostly voice, then sees an eerie light coming from the portrait of Josette Collins.

At the inn restaurant, a mysterious woman asks Maggie questions about the Collins family.

David makes a startling discovery at the Old House. Matthew grows fearful and desperate. Sam becomes disturbed when he learns about the mysterious woman who has come to town.

The ghost of Bill Malloy appears to David and threatens Matthew, who prepares to kill Victoria. David summons Burke to Collinwood, much to Roger's chagrin.

Roger and Burke search for Victoria. The ghost of Josette and Bill appear and scare Matthew.

Victoria is certain she saw the ghost of Josette. The spirit moves between the columns at the Old House.

Sam reveals to Roger that Roger's estranged wife Laura has returned to Collinsport.

Laura has returned, though has not contacted the Collinses. Roger and Sam are horrified and very worried. Liz doesn't want Laura to see David. Joe and Maggie's relationship develops. Sam paints a horrifying picture while drunk.

Mrs. Johnson goes to the Collinsport Inn to visit Burke Devlin to let him know Laura Collins arrived in town. Laura reveals that she has come back for David, who has a nightmare about his mother.

David is told that his mother is back in Collinsport. He feels that she is watching him.

Unsettling reunions for Burke and Sam who each meet Laura again after ten years. Laura and Burke share their respective plans. Sam is driven to work on his disturbing painting.

Laura's return continues to send shock waves through Collinsport. David eagerly anticipates meeting his mother.

Laura agrees to stay in Matthew's old cottage. While asleep, David hears his mother calling for him.
