Cluff's dog finds a frozen chicken in the beck behind the Lawton's house. Cissie is bedridden and Spencer is only an auctioneer's assistant but they appear to be living beyond their means. Cluff fears he maybe cooking the books.

In the village Monksmoor, Luke and Abel Sowden have fallen out over barmaid Ruth Rudge. Their strict father believes she's an evil temptress. When Luke finds Abel had been with her he attacks the woman. The following he is found murdered.

Grocer Mr Smart is acting suspicious after a break-in where a batch of Cumberland cigarettes have been stolen. Smart suspects Pete Hirst, brother of shop girl June, but won't tell the police because they were already stolen.

Jack Ramsey and Len Swinbank have been stealing sheep from local farmers for months. When potholers discover fifty carcasses on the moors near Gunnarshaw, Sgt Cluff begins delving among likely suspects.

Poacher Willie Gann overhears Inspector Mole boasting that he is making a speech, at a posh dinner. When Mole's house is burgled, Gann's rabbits foot found left on the floor. Cluff suspects a professional burglar has set Gann up.

There have been ten barn fires in Gunnarshaw and while they haven't been serious poacher Sammy Shaw has been seen nearby. When Cluff is invited to the Hunt Ball, at the Cobb house, he discovers how far the family have fallen.

The Swann family have moved from the city to take over Fellside pub but are struggling to win over the locals. Pearl Core's arrival stirs up trouble for Don Swann, so when she's found dead in the fell, local farmer Moses shouts murder.

Cluff visits Hubert Pencarron, in jail, following the death of his sister but discovers his brother-in-law Reader hasn't been to see him. He believes Reader was his getaway driver. Pencarron escapes jail and Reader is found dead.

The fair arrives in Gunnarshaw. Young Robina Leigh takes a shine to Judd Bristow who runs the dodgems, unaware that her is planning to break in her house. When £100 is stolen and Robina vanishes, Cluff knows where to look.

Vicky Bevin fighting off the intentions of married teacher Dave Porritt and her work mate Jake. An outbreak of drug taking, by local youths, has lead to some erratic behaviour. When Vicky is found murdered, Cluff suspects it's linked.

Pensioner Bob Wheatrick has £200 hidden under his floorboards. When his wife goes into hospital he moves in with his daughter. When Bob returns to check his home the money has gone. Jody, a vagrant is suspected but Cluff thinks different.

Estate Agent Mr. Liddler has a brick, with a message, thrown through his window and demands the Sgt. Cluff take charge of the investigation. Liddler has bullied the council into developing Wellington Road and the residents want blood.

PC Chris Ripon is the new local policeman for the village of Langermede. Called out to a robbery of tools at the home forester Saul Farrer. He returns badly beaten up, putting the blame at gypsy Tod Mellor who is alibied by Sgt. Cluff.
