A down-on-his-luck shoe salesman named Zvonko Bandic is forced to choose between going to a football game or joining his lazy wife, Suncica, in meeting their new neighbors, Ivica and Marica Kumarica.

Marica introduces Suncica to a new energetic diet to improve her marriage. Zvonko, meanwhile, wants to part of it but learns if he tries the diet, he can persuade Suncica to quit. He must then swallow his pride and admit to Suncica he loves her no matter what.

Zvonko gets a first-hand look at Robert's swinging bachelor life when he takes refuge at Robert's apartment after work rather than return home to finish an argument with Suncica over visiting her relatives for the weekend. Robert invites two women over at his place where one of them, an attractive but dim-witted airplane stewardess, tempts Zvonko.

There has been a rash of burglaries in the area, and the Kumarica's house is robbed and Zvonko's car stereo is ripped off, both families seek alternatives: Ivica and Marica buy a guard dog that won't stop barking, and Zvonko purchases a fire arm. One fateful night, the two methods of home defense butt heads, and it's not a pretty picture.
