The split (1931-1954): In the 1930s, when the French colonial empire was at its height, the first demands for independence began to make themselves heard, but France remained deaf to all the protests. Senegal, Indochina, Madagascar, Algeria, Morocco, Côte d'Ivoire - France did everything possible to preserve its colonies. But in vain.

The rupture (1954-2017): After eight years of bloody battles, the French colonial empire was collapsing. The Dien Bien Phu defeat forced France to relinquish Indochina, then its Indian trading posts. For the colonies it was the long-awaited spark. The Algerian war erupted immediately, and from Africa to the Caribbean, the fire spread.
