Al-Fadl bin Al-Sahl kills Harthama with poison, angering Al-Ma'moun and causing him to remove Al-Fadl from his position. Al-Fadl takes revenge on the Caliph by killing Ali bin Musa and blaming it on Al-Ma'moun. In turn Al-Ma'moun kills Al-Fadl.

Al-Ma'moun dies after his illness gets worse as a result of his departure to face the Romans. The Caliphate is passed to his brother Al-Motasem Billah after him. The public come out against what Ma'moun compelled them to, returning to the belief that the Qur'an was not created.
