Later is father relocated the whole family to Orlando, Florida where his career begin to unfold. After high school, higher education and football called. He attended Albany State College in Georgia. He pursued a walk on tryout for the football team. When that didn't work out he later moved back to Orlando and received his Associate Arts Degree from Seminole Community College. This helped him get a shot at walking on to the University of Central Florida's football team. Successful on making the team, he spent two years there. Not graduating and his head still n the clouds, a friends Mom suggested he try commercials because of his comedic timing. She also thought that he had natural ability to make people laugh and also pay attention. After a stint in Orlando doing a string of commercials and TV spots, a break came his way. While waiting tables at Planet Hollywood Orlando, Hollywood had come to town. A fellow server was in charge of putting together extras for a Big Budget Film called "Rosewood". She had become friends with the Stunt Coordinator and he was looking for a tough Black Stunt Guy to deliver dialogue as well. She approached Derrick at work, knowing he was a dialogue actor with a football background. He later drove to Gainesville, Florida in the middle of the night. There he auditioned directly for John Singleton on set. Jim Vickers the Stunt Coordinator later that night informed him that he got the job. The shoot was successful and Derrick considered this was Hollywood knocking. With a few appearances on TV shows/Movies like The Ken and Kel show (Nickelodeon) and First-Time Felon (HBO Films); it was time for Derrick to go west to Los Angeles.Fresh off the boat from Florida, Hollywood came a knocking. Derrick started landing roles on several projects including Buffy the Vampire Slayer(with Sarah Michelle Gellar), 24(with Kiefer Sutherland), Boston Legal (with William Schatner), Charmed (with Alyssa Milano), Scorpion (with Elyes Gabel), and Life of a King (with Cuba Gooding Jr.).Still working as an actor and a brief stuntman career, Derrick never forgets his first love of doing Voices.
