It begins with a crash between the landlord Trelawney, who has decided to equip a ship for a treasure hunt, and captain Smollet, who was hired for the trip.

The captain gives the team shore leave. When he casts off Jim jumps into a boat and is taken to the island. There he meets an overgrown islander, Ben Gunn.

When Jim comes back to the log cabin, he is horrified to find that it has been occupied by Silver and his people. Jim is caught.
