On the day of Carly and John's wedding, Catherine tells John she's pregnant. When John tells Carly, Carly suggests Catherine stay with them. John wonders how he'll survive

As Mahalia is dealing with a custody battle, John writes an essay about her for a Mother of the Year contest. Her winning the contest sets off a series of unpleasant events.

Feeling they aren't connecting like they should, fitness-freak Carly takes a literature course. In turn, brainy John decides to start working out, taking up Eggers's offer of her being his personal trainer at the police officers' gym

Carly and John break up after a therapy session. As a just friends favor, John goes to the airport to pick up Ray Charles, who's due to perform at Carly's bar, but he ends up leaving the musician behind and the bar without entertainment

Dexter invites his estranged father to watch a production of John's play; John misinterprets a sign from a man who doesn't speak English.

After John gives Eggers advice on how to get the man of her dreams, she uses the opportunity to get him to agree to be her date for a Halloween party. Meanwhile, Gene must prove his mettle by cleaning up a toxic chemical spill.

Crossroads bans groping, kissing or full-frontal hugs and naps driving the staff to distraction. John's son Tony arrives having being thrown out of Yale after he feigned insanity. Eggers dates Chris - a man who thinks he's Jesus.

John buys an expensive tape recorder and destroys it with Cheese H. Taste salad dressing. Hampton tests a stun vest but the remote falls into the wrong hands. Dexter has trouble breaking up with Jocelyn.

John decides to relive his old radio days hosting a local late night program - but can't stay awake. A girl calls Dexter out of touch with contemporary black culture - so he becomes a rapper. The women become shoes buddies.

Employees of the bus station must take physicals and a general knowledge test to get reduced insurance rates. Hampton becomes a mounted policeman to attract attention.

John needs a buddy relationship and goes hunting with Hampton. Mahalia drops hints about her upcoming birthday so the gang tricks her into helping plan her own party by saying that it is for Oscar.
