This is not a period piece, though the sense of year and place are immense: the ironies, heartbreaks, embarrassments and emotional spayings are urgently recognisable today to anyone who's ever been part of a family.

It is sweet, and charming, and pretty, and funny; not too funny, or dangerously so, or challengingly so, but just gently funny.
