Hadleigh has his home invaded and is faced with a strange domestic problem.

At the same time as he enters into a slick business deal, Hadleigh embarks on a Yorkshire walking tour with a friend, Dr. Salter. The tour is cut short abruptly and Hadleigh is called upon to help in a life-and-death situation.

Hadleigh calls to see Brian Alwyn, a racing driver friend now recovering from an accident on the track. A casual invitation to escort Brian's music critic wife, Sarah, to Covent Garden Opera, takes Hadleigh into a stormy emotional situation.

Returning from London to Yorkshire by train, Hadleigh meets Anne Hepton and her eight-year-old daughter, Charlotte. The meeting has a profound effect upon him when he later meets Anne under different circumstances.

Who is the man that Hadleigh meets in a churchyard, and why should he choose such a bizarre meeting place? In a seedy North London café Hadleigh finds a link with his past, which forces him to give house-room to an unwelcome guest...

Hadleigh's late-night visitor prefers to enter Melford Park through a window. Whenever the talkative Harry Mortlake is around, Hadleigh is ready for trouble. But why does he show such uncharacteristic interest in Hadleigh's tailor?

Three cups laid for coffee on a Sunday morning mean that Melford Park has a visitor. Anne Hepton is unconcerned - until she sees the lovely Nicola Penn descending the staircase with Hadleigh.

Hadleigh always has a full engagement book but agrees to organise the local agricultural show. All goes well until another problem claims his attention and Hadleigh is bitterly reproached for interfering.

On a business trip to Germany, Hadleigh encounters a former university friend. But why should 'Max Frank' pretend not to recognise Hadleigh, and why should he be interviewing the Prager family for Swiss Television?

Two sets of problems - one domestic and the other agricultural - beset Hadleigh. The first puts him in a difficult emotional situation with Anne Hepton, and the other could cause the cancellation of the Westdale Agricultural Show.

Colonel Winstanley is a retired war hero. When his second-hand bookshop comes under threat of compulsory purchase, he seeks Hadleigh's aid.

Should Anne Hepton stay the night at Melford Park, or return to her cottage? Far-reaching consequences attend her choice....

After the emotional upsets of a messy divorce, Hadleigh is looking forward to a quiet weekend in Dublin with Anne. But he hasn't reckoned on a ruthless journalist hunting for a meaty story.
