The forces of Hidalgo and Allende arrive at the outskirts of México City after defeating the royalist army in the Battle of Monte de las Cruces. General Ignacio Allende sends a dispatch to Mexico City demanding the surrender of the Viceroy, who refuses. Hidalgo, worried about what might happen if the insurgent army should overrun the city, and also concerned about the proximity of Calleja's army, decides to retreat, and thus opens a breach between himself and Ignacio Allende.
