While opposed by eco-activists, and needing to secure funding, Proteus Group proceeds with its DRIL Switch Project to access dark energy, but the pretest of the proton accelerator does not go smoothly.

When the expedited experiment goes awry, DRIL starts to function outside the vacuum seal and must be contained, notwithstanding the sabotage of the electrical power substations linked to Proteus.
