The ventriloquist Tengan puts on a show about a ventriloquist who becomes posed by his dummy and murders his wife. Tengan asks Kogoro to watch him so the show performance doesn't become a reality. Kogoro turns him down. The next morning, Tengan's wife is killed. But is the dummy actually responsible?

Ventriloquist Tengan's wife was bludgeoned to death with a trophy. Affected by multiple personality disorder, Tengan confesses he killed her but is not aware. His apprentice becomes a suspect but Conan feels something is off. But the truth will prevail!

Conan, Ran, Kogoro, Heiji, and Kazuka visit an inn in the mountains of Nagano. Heiji acquires a phone of a figure carrying a scythe running across the water of the outdoor bath. It is rumored to be a supernatural creator known as a kamaitachi.

As more incidents arise stirring up the idea of the demon kamaitachi, Bonzo is murdered. Of course, Conana notices the oddities of the crime scene. Somehow he and Heiji must prove that the culprit is a human being who has somehow made it possible to walk on water and commit murder.

Kogoro, Conan, and Ran visit the Kawanakajima battlefield where they run into Detective Yamato and his associates of the Nagano Prefectural Police. During their tour, they visit the Chikumagawa River where a severed head pops up to the surface, only to be that of one of the Nagano detectives.

After Detective Takeda is murdered. Lieutenant Kano is found dead from hanging in his home. Inspector Morofushi reasons that he was hanged after being strangled. Later, the culprit reveals his plan to kill three more people. Who is next on the list? And can Conan and the others unmask the murderer?

As the things progress and more murders are committed. More and more evidence appears to name Inspector Yamato as the serial murderer. As his associates begin to turn on him Yamato leaves to go search for the killer alone. But a deliberate trap is set for the culprit. But is it Yamato or is he the true target of the true culprit?

Conan and the rest of the Detective Boys try to put to rest their suspicions of a man who visit the Poirot Cafe numerous times with his focus on their friend, Amuro. They follow the man but Amuro confront him first. The man runs away and the team loses him. Later at the cafe, they encounter the man face to face with Amuro. Everything is revealed in a shocking conclusion.
