Dru informs John that he has done all he can for Pat with her trial approaching.

Ken and Laura quarreled about her desire for vengeance where Pat is concerned, and Laura swore she'd never forget his infidelity with Janet. Jim questioned Janet about the nature of her relationship with Ken. Laura continued to be suspicious of what Ken knew through his affair with Janet. Ken faced conflicted feelings over whether or not to admit to Laura that he knew Tom pushed Pat into having an abortion. John's hired private investigator got closer to proof of an affair between Janet and Ken, and a Dru speculated that it would all lead to the secret they're keeping.

Jim believed Pat would be found guilty. John attempted to get answers from Janet, who wouldn't reveal anything despite his pleas to tell anything that will help him defend Pat. Lee fished for information about the murder case but got no where with Dru or John. Dru thought John made a huge mistake in his confrontation with Janet who could clam up even more now. John maintained his opinion that that a baby is somehow involved in the case and a number of people are actively covering it up.

Laura mentioned to Ken the idea that Pat had been pregnant, but Laura was certain Tom didn't father the child. Janet admitted to Ken she wanted to tell help Pat by telling John her secret but she stopped because she's afraid of what it would do to the Matthews family. Dr. Warren asked Larry for details of the procedure Ernest performed on Pat when she had an ovarian cyst. Pat again refused to under truth serum, but John noticed her scared reaction when he made comments her close friendship with Janet.

Sgt. Adams took the witness stand and underwent questioning by John who scored points, though D.A. Martin remained certain that the prosecution will win. Pat learned that Jim and Mary would be called to testify next. An enraged Pat was appalled by the suggestion that she committed murder. John forcefully tried to make Pat realize the gravity of the situation that she'll face if she doesn't do something to help herself.

Bill introduced John to Missy who made an impression on him. Missy told John as much as she could about Pat and Tom without breaking her promise to Pat. Dru made Lee aware of her prejudice against Pat and girls she deems to be troublemakers. Missy feared her own illegitimacy might be exposed on the witness stand when she testifies.

Crime scene photos introduced at the trial bothered Pat. Jim and Mary noticed Pat's expression of disbelief as the trial continued. Frank took the witness stand to testify about finding Pat with Tom's body and her running away while he phoned for the police. Laura accused Ken of falling for John's attempt to make the jury pity Pat.

John worried about how to present a defense for an uncooperative Pat. The men mulled over possible defenses with John dismissing self-defense since Pat herself speaks reverently of her love for Tom. Dru reiterated the idea that an insanity plea might work with the jury as Pat's comments will be in contradiction to the facts. Alice didn't understand Janet's certainty that John has a chance since the press has already convicted Pat. Mary and Jim spoke highly of John and his devotion to clearing Pat. Pat became upset when John told her she was going to hear bad things ...

Dru tried to prepare Mary for her testimony, but John shocked everyone by calling Laura to the stand. D.A. Martin delighted over John's mistake of questioning Laura, but John cleverly maneuvered a venomous Laura into name-calling and completely assassinating Pat's character. Pat flinched when Laura insisted that Tom was interested in Carol Pearson, not Pat. After Laura's testimony, Ken was incandescent with anger over Laura's malicious remarks and walked out on her. John's trick had the desired effect when a confused Pat realized she would have nothing left if Tom had...

Pearson took the stand and stated emphatically that she and Tom were not serious. John called several female and male students to describe Tom's romantic behavior. The fraternity housemother made disparaging remarks of Tom's tendency to shirk responsibility. Pat couldn't stop thinking about Carol Pearson and her relationship with Tom.

Dru admonished John for his risky tactics such as putting Laura on the witness stand. John and Martin sparred over Missy's testimony of Pat and Tom's relationship, which Martin declared as prejudicial because of Missy friendship with Pat and dating Bill Matthews. A furious Liz quietly boiled with anger at Pat for sullying the Matthews name through her own actions and befriending that waitress Melissa Palmer.

Adams cautioned Martin not to be prematurely victorious because John has a history of winning impossible cases. Bill volunteered to testify on Pat's behalf, but Martin's cross-examination defused his helpful comments. Bill admitted in the witness stand that he considers Missy his girlfriend. Ken had another go at Laura for seeking satisfaction against Pat with lies.

Dru mended fences with John over his trial tactics. Pat refused to believe that Tom didn't love her. John conceded to Dru that this trial has affected him more personally than any other. Mary took the stand, and D.A. Martin successfully cross-examined her. A triumphant Martin felt John had definitely lost the case by failing to provide any proof of Tom being a womanizer and of poor character.

Dru and John were at odds again over John's handling of the case. John put Pat on the witness stand, where she reiterated a mutual love for Tom and their plans for marriage and children. John questioned Pat's memories of the night of the murder, but she insisted she never went to his apartment and didn't shoot him.

The pressure of John's relentless questions about the shooting caused an emotional Pat to declare repeatedly that Tom is still alive. John stunned everyone by resting the defense's case with Pat's lack of clarity. D.A. Martin called psychiatrist Dr. Hubert to the stand for a rebuttal. John begged Pat to give Hubert permission to disclose what he knows of her case. Martin was shocked when Hubert diagnosed Pat as being in an hysterical state that's causing her to block out memories of the night of the murder, and she's declined taking truth serum which could unlock what...

Pat finally became bothered by her inability to recall what happened the night of Tom's shooting. The Matthews family agreed that Pat believed everything she said, but couldn't understand her refusal to take truth serum. Janet wrestled with her in a tree desire to help Pat by telling what she knows. After recalling his conversation with Tom before he was shot, Ken requested a meeting with John. D.A. Martin tried to stop John from calling a brand new witness in his rebuttal.

Judge Sutherland allowed John to call Ken as surrebuttal witness. Pat lost her mind and the courtroom erupted as Ken took the stand and proceeded to reveal her affair with Tom, the pregnancy, Tom forcing her to abort their baby and finally telling her that he didn't love her or intend to marry her. Jim suddenly realized that Pat refused the sodium pentathol because she feared all her secrets would be exposed. John urged the Matthewses to be mindful of the sacrifice Ken made and to give Pat time to adjust to her public humiliation. Laura deemed Ken a liar, said she's ...

Ann admitted to Missy that she and Pat had discussed unwed mothers, and Ann wondered if she could have prevented Pat's current predicament. D.A. Martin applauded John's loyalty to Pat's case and asked if he could attend the truth serum session with Pat. Dru irritated Lee when he proposed a situation where Lee was in the same situation as Pat. John confessed to Dru that he is in love with Pat. Pat offered sincere apologies to John for her behavior throughout the trial. John reassured Pat that she still has a chance at freedom.

Bill and Liz were at odds over the effect of Ken's testimony on the good Matthews name. Liz blames Janet for not coming forward and telling what she knew. Eric defended Ken's honesty to Laura. Ken tried to ease Janet's guilt. Under sodium pentathol, Pat remembered the confrontation with Tom, picking up the gun, and considering shooting herself, but Dr. Hubert had to stop the session as Pat when she absolutely couldn't recall anything else. D.A. Martin ordered the arrest of Mr. Alberts, the abortionist.

John confided to Dru that he believed Pat would be freed now. Pat rejected a visit from Mary and Jim because she's too ashamed to face them. Lee noted John's unwillingness to talk about hiring a housekeeper once she leaves to live on campus. Without the drug, Pat managed to give Dr. Hubert intimate details of her relationship with Tom, but she still couldn't recall anything about the shooting.

Dr. Hubert continued to push Pat's memory. Jim felt sadness over Pat's sterility. Mary urged Alice to believe that nothing has changed, and Pat is still the same sister she always loved. D.A. Martin reminded John that Dr. Hubert would only be permitted to testify to certain things in court. After John conceded in open court that Pat shot Tom, Pat took the stand an testified to everything she remembered. Under John's questioning, Pat remembered pulling the trigger and shooting Ti but insisted she couldn't stop herself.

Mr. Alberts took the stand and testified truthfully that Tom instigated and arranged the abortion though Pat was conflicted. In his closing statement to the jury, D.A. Martin suggested that Pat yielded to Tom's desires of her own free will and intentionally killed him to avenge being spurned. John countered in his closing remarks that Pat not only loved Tom and wanted to marry him but was also the witness most defensive of his memory. He suggested that Tom's selfish use of Pat caused her to lose her mind and shoot him in a moment of insanity. Judge Sutherland ...

Preoccupied with jury deliberations, John avoided talking with Dru about his admission that he's fallen in love with Pat. Ernest confided in Janet that he came very close to breaking patient confidentiality to save Pat. John speculated to Pat that it was a good sign that the jury took a long time in trying to reach a verdict. Jim attempted to soothe Mary's fears that Pat will be too ashamed to accept her family's love and understanding. At the courthouse Lee deemed Pat to be a pretty woman and said she felt sorry for her.

Lee complimented John on his skill in court with closing summations. Dru expressed pessimism over the prospect of John launching a successful appeal should the jury find Pat guilty. After Laura continued to blame Pat and Janet for everything and Ken rise to defend them, Laura suggested they have a legal separation. The sequestered jury took a preliminary vote with results seven to five in favor of Pat's exoneration.

When a conflicted Alice lamented not knowing the Pat who became pregnant and had an abortion, Janet sternly advised her not to judge Pat guilty. D.A. Martin and Sgt. Adams were surprised as jury deliberations dragged on. Jim and Mary promised Dru that they would offer Pat their love and understanding no matter what happened in court. Suicidal ideations ran through Pat's mind as she re-lived testimony from the trial. Dru told Jim and Mary about John's personal obsession for Pat's case. Ann convinced a reluctant Missy to visit Pat. Missy admitted she has trouble allowing herself to live Bill because she fears his reaction to her past. When Russ needed help with his schoolwork, Pat was self-deprecating and commented that she's no longer interested in academics. Dru talked asked John to leave the room so that he could speak privately with Jim about Pat's psychological problems and John's prejudice because of his obsession with Pat's case. Lee complimented her father in his good looks but was concerned he's too attentive to Pat. John worried whether or not Lee would accept him being in love with Pat, while Dru sternly ordered him to stay away from Pat.

Mary fretted about Pat's future after Dru suggested that she seek therapy with Dr. Hubert. Mary's concern turned to irritation when Alice reported that Pat was missing from the house. A speeding Pat was pulled over and ticketed. Liz's comments over dinner annoyed Mary and created tension. Pat returned home and had a run-in with Liz over Pat's assertion that Liz isn't fond of Missy. Missy's fears about being judged by others and continued conflicts over accepting his loan worried Bill.

Mary acknowledged to Jim her continued resentment of Janet for withholding what she knew of Pat and Tom's relationship. Ken wanted Janet to see Pat, and Janet expressed continued concern that Pat might consider suicide. Dru talked with Pat about seeing Dr. Hubert. When Pat said she wished she were dead, Dru promised her that there's another world awaiting her in this life.

Pat met Laura and was cordial, but Laura dismissed her and Aunt Janet as loose women. Jim let Janet know that he, unlike Mary, doesn't hold I'll feelings toward her for keeping Pat's secret. When Jim mentioned Pat needing therapy, Janet observed that a decent man's genuine love for Pat might help her even more. Pat offered Missy bad advice by suggesting that Missy lie to Bill about her past. John admitted to Dru he thinks of Pat as his future wife.

Janet proposed that a loving man could change Pat's life but theorized that she'll never completely forget everything she endured recently. Jim correctly guessed that Janet was hurt in the past by a man and hasn't recovered herself. Ken stopped by on a pretext to see Janet, and Janet speculated that Jim thinks they're living together in her apartment. Pat went to see Janet and things didn't go well between them when Janet reprimanded her for appearing ungrateful. Pat was disappointed to learn that Janet and Ken were once lovers. Janet told Ken about her visit from Pat, who had also been to see an unforgiving Laura. Ken confessed his affair to Eric, who advised him that he should forget Janet because Laura won't ever give him the satisfaction of a divorce. Instead, Eric encouraged him to be patient with Laura and try to reconcile. Lee questioned Dru about temporary insanity pleas. John and Pat quarreled over Pat wanting him to keep her recent speeding ticket from Jim and Mary.

Dru and John continued to be at odds over John's devotion to Pat. Pat had a chance meeting on the campus bridge with Tim Bradley, one of Tom's fraternity brothers. Alice bristled at Pat's ungrateful treatment of John, who she says she doesn't like. Later a despondent Pat turned to Mary. After promising to change her attitude, Pat phoned John to apologize. Lee reacted to John's playing the stern father when she got home past curfew following a date, then she wouldn't go with John to meet Pat.

Missy tried to dissuade Bill from thinking of her in a romantic context. Liz whined to Jim about Bill's interest in Missy. Alice hoped that she and Russ could become close as he and Pat are since she's been tutoring him in maths. Jim speculated to Mary that Pat's speeding was a result of her wanting to place herself danger and die because of her public humiliation. Bill and Liz reached an impasse over Missy as Liz doesn't want him involved with her and warned that she won't finance his marriage. Alice asked Pat to confide in her once more and wished they would be ...

Lee defined John's interest in Pat as being one of feeling sorry for her. Pat argued that she didn't want to see John or Dru as they're reminders of the worst part of her life. Dru understood Pat's feelings and suggested to Jim and Mary that she's getting in trouble with things traffic tickets because she feels the need to be punished. Alice made Pat meet with John when he dropped by the Matthews house much to Dru's annoyance. John opined to Pat that she'll only truly be free once she admits that she give herself to the right man.

John informed Dru that he kept Pat out of traffic court by getting her to give up driving for a year. Jim and John had a chat about their daughters. Mary passed on to Alice her father's theory that Pat wants to be punished for the things she did. Dru and John helped Lee celebrate her birthday. John expressed regret that he'll be forty years old next year. Dru chastised John for his unwise behavior toward Pat, but John vowed that he can make Pat want to live again.

John fretted about getting older and being alone once Lee lives on the college campus. Alice and Pat sniped at each other when Pat said she didn't want to see Janet. Janet assured Ken that she won't be waiting for him if he and Laura actually end their marriage. Pat asked Ken to stop defending her to Laura who has a right to hate her. Janet and Pat reconciled their differences and Janet confessed that she too once wanted to end her life. Laura swore to Ken that she'd never grant him a divorce no matter what he does.

Lee admitted to Dru that she's concerned about John's fears of growing old. Dru diagnosed John's behavior toward Pat as a mid-life crisis and found him overconfident to think Pat would share his feelings. After Dru proposed that Pat might be too damaged to love any man, John paid an impromptu visit to the Matthews house. Alice irritated Pat by making her look more presentable and then seeing John. John tried to make Pat realize that he can help her rebuild her shattered her life, but Pat wasn't enthusiastic.

Mary encouraged Pat to accept John's help. Dru tricked John into admitting that doesn't expect Pat to return his feelings for her. Pat again suggested that Missy not take a chance on losing Bill by sharing her past with him. Bill told Missy that he's not casual in his feelings for her and talked about the future he wants with her. Liz strongly advised Bill to investigate Missy's background before jumping into a commitment like marriage.

Janet speculated to John that Pat has concealed her anger at Tom but will eventually let it out. Ken wanted to talk about a future with Janet, but she was too caught up in her belief that John can help Pat get over Tom. John and Pat argued on the campus bridge when she talked suicide and self-destructive feelings. John forced Pat to go home with him and meet Lee. Lee and Pat's meeting was awkward. Lee worried that John's having a midlife crisis.

Feeling guilty and unworthy of Bill, Missy declared that she's going to work to pay him back and skip college. Jim offered Bill a sympathetic ear and sound advice when Bill moaned about his failure at bringing Liz and Missy together as friends. Pat recounted her evening with John and Lee to Alice and admitted being uncomfortable in Lee's presence. John attempted to convince Lee that he's only interested in helping Pat regain her life and independence.

Eric paid a surprise visit to Laura, offered his sympathy and understanding, then advised her to get a divorce. Janet continued to rebuff Ken and made the analogy that like his son and her former fiance, some men never change. When Laura said she wouldn't let Ken go to Janet, Eric reasoned that staying in an acrimonious marriage wouldn't really be much of a victory for her. Janet wanted to believe Ken's assertion that John only wants to help Pat. Laura shocked Ken with her decision to end their marriage.

Ken exploded after Laura agreed to the divorce but only if the grounds are adultery with Janet. Alice saw a future with matrimony for Pat and Janet Pat countered that she and Janet have no interest in men. Later, Pat lost her temper with Mary upon discovering that Mary is having John and Lee over for dinner. Dru cautioned John that Pat's parents won't accept his love for Pat and suggested that he tell them himself, otherwise Dru will. Janet understood Laura's reaction, told Ken their affair is over, and suggested they'll never be together because he always reconciled ...

Lee rejected John's assertion that she'll become fond of Pat once she gets to know her. Pat tried to concoct a way out of having Sunday dinner with John and Lee, and Alice supported her. Dru protested John becoming involved with a much younger woman like Pat while assuming a fatherly role in her life. After Pat told her parents that she absolutely refused to dine with John and Lee, Mary phoned John with a polite excuse for canceling the dinner. Pat experienced another round of bad dreams and wailing babies.

Pat confided in Missy that she can't get over Tom's death and is guilty of his murder even though John got her off on a legal technicality. Missy shared her fears about Pat with Bill. Pat informed John that she doesn't want anything to do with him because his attempts to make her face the past and move forward have only resurrected her nightmares. Missy envisioned Pat leaping to her death from the campus bridge. John couldn't bear an emotional Pat's declaration that she's still in love with Tom and can't accept that they won't ever marry.

Pat dreamed of murdering Tom, and her shrieks awakened Alice. Later Alice confided in Mary about Pat's restlessness and being tormented by Tom and crying babies in her sleep. John attempted to make Dru understand that his love for Pat is real, but Dru continued to assert that John's primary reason for helping Pat isn't so altruistic. Lee griped to Dru about her father's weary appearance and mercurial behavior since the trial and his involvement with Pat Matthews. Dru advised Lee to share her feelings with John.

Mary lamented Pat's fate to Jim reasoning that things haven't gotten better for Pat despite her exoneration. Pat's dismissed Jim's encouragement to go back to college since her criminal past has forever ruined her chances of a teaching career. Jim observed to Mary that John's not qualified to help Pat's psychological problems and pushed Pat to seek professional therapy from Dr. Hubert. Pat's devotion to an unrealistic view of Tom disturbed Jim. Pat rebuffed John again. Tensions flared between Lee and John.

Eric apologized to Ken who blamed him for triggering Laura's desire to divorce him on grounds of adultery with Janet. Ken begged Janet to stop rejecting their love for one another. Ken called John for divorce advice. John wouldn't acknowledge Dru's accusations of losing his reason because of his obsession with Pat. John disappointed Ken by insisting there's no clean way out of his marriage without Laura's cooperation and suggested he seek counsel from Dru instead because Laura will resent him being represented by the man who won Pat's acquittal.

Ken met with Dru and confirmed that Laura does have a case against him for cheating with Janet. Dru advised Ken to think more carefully before deciding to pursue the divorce. Ken recounted his visit with Dru to Janet who continued to dissuade him from wanting a relationship. Ken argued to Janet that their relationship was based on love, unlike their relationships with others. Ken considered his past with Laura and all they experienced together.

Nightmares plagued Pat who began to doubt her sanity. Jim told Mary that he failed to convince Pat to finish college and undergo therapy. Pat wanted Alice to stop discussing her with their parents, but Alice told Mary and Jim about Pat's tortured dreams. Mary talked with a stoic Pat and also failed to help her. John tried to take a walk with Pat but she became upset and ran away from him.

Jim and Mary continued wringing their hands over Pat's self-loathing and refusal to help herself. When Missy came to visit and offer friendship, Mary had to twist Pat's arm to agree to see her. Missy's happy news about being successful in school was lost on Pat as she had another flashback to Tom's murder. Lee accused John of becoming a stranger, and he wasn't honest about not being able to get thoughts of Pat out of his mind.

When Ken wanted to move forward with the divorce, Dru encouraged him to wait and try to become friendly with Laura again so that they one day might part on amicable terms. Laura contemplated her ambivalent feelings for Ken, but shocked Eric with her expression of unwavering hatred of Janet and Pat. Janet told Ken that she agreed with Dru. Ken suggested to Janet that having her in his daily life would help him to remain friendly with Laura. Ken phoned Laura with a request to meet.

Pat's admission that she should have died as punishment for the abortion disturbed Ernest, who later persuaded Janet to speak with Jim and Mary about pushing Pat to get psychological help. Ken proposed to Laura that they try to suppress the animosity between them and become friends. Ernest realized that Janet has moved on from Ken and gave her a peck on the cheek. Laura silently gloated that Ken will come crawling back to her again.

After Janet spoke with Mary as directed by Ernest, Jim consulted with Dr. Hubert about Pat. Hubert upset Jim with speculation that that Pat might carry out a death sentence on herself since the jury at Tom's trial didn't. Dru gloated to John that his advice to Ken will reunite Laura and Ken. After brought up John's reluctance to tell Jim and Mary that he's in love with Pat, John decided to confess but then chickened out when they complimented him for his objective treatment of Pat.

Lee moaned about John's inattentiveness. John gave Dru excuses for not admitting to Jim and Mary that he's in love with Pat. Pat explained to Jim that because she was coerced into taking truth serum, she's now tormented by detailed memories of Tom's murder. After Mary let it slip that she knows about her nightmares, an enraged Pat angrily confronted Alice, forcing Jim to slap her into submission. Pat reluctantly agreed to Jim's demands that she agree to see John.

Pat made apologies to the family for her hysterical behavior, while Mary and Jim took pride in Alice's mature handling of her sister's rage. Lee helped dress John in less conservative clothes for his dinner date with Pat, which Lee believed was related to Pat's court case. Pat's appearance held John transfixed. Pat and John's dinner date went well until she admitted that she only agreed to have dinner with him under duress from her father.

Pat wondered about John persistence in pursuing her despite her obvious disdain for him. John admitted that he wants to help Pat overcome everything she's been through in the past year. Missing her father's attention, Lee sought companionship from Dru. Alice couldn't understand why Pat isn't interested in an older man like John. John became annoyed over Dru's meddling with Lee and Pat. Dru worried about the effects of John's infatuation with Pat.

Laura's improved disposition delighted Eric, as did her speculation that a reconciliation with Ken is in the future. Eric tried to make Laura understand that Ken was equally responsible for his infidelity with Janet, while Janet attempted to make Ken realize that their affair is over. Ernest found Ken at Janet's apartment, but she reassured him that any interest in continuing their affair is one-sided. Ken became jealous over Ernest, whom he blamed for Janet not continuing their affair.

Ken and Janet argued about his jealousy of Ernest and unwillingness to accept the end of their affair. Janet made dinner for herself and Ernest, while Laura tried to entice Ken with a intimate supper of her own. Ken retreated from Laura's obvious attempts at seduction, as did Janet, who pulled away from Ernest's hug and kiss at the end of dinner.

Lee confided in Missy her aversion to Pat Matthews. Later, Missy spent time with Bill but felt uncomfortable around Liz. Liz whined to Mary about Susan's distance and the fact that she can only lure Bill home by inviting Missy over. John danced with Pat, promising that time would heal all wounds, but she ran from him when he impulsively kissed her.

An upset Pat cautioned John that she'll never love another man again, including him. Dru tried to help an unhappy Lee. John and Dru sparred over Lee's growing friendship with Missy, who is also Pat's friend. Dru chastised John for ignoring his own daughter in order to chase after a young woman who doesn't want him. Pat warned Alice not to trust men because they're all like Tom Baxter and only interested in casual sex.

Mary and Jim disagreed about Alice's friendship with Janet who Mary believes is too permissive. Jim defended Janet to Mary. Bill admonished Liz for her treatment of Missy and Janet, but Liz feigned hurt feelings and cried. Alice confided in Janet about Pat's negative comments regarding men and Tom. Ernest stopped by Janet's apartment without an invitation, which annoyed her. Janet insisted to Ernest that they must keep their relationship platonic.
