He was a director and writer, known for Heroes and Sinners (1955), Perfectionist (1951) and Skies Above (1965), with the latter nominated for the Grand Prix at the Moscow International Film Festival that year. He was married to Keiko Kishi, Japanese actress most known for her work with Yasujiro Ozu, Kon Ichikawa, and Masaki Kobayashi. He died on November 5, 1982 in Paris.
