He was a heavyweight professional boxer who held the WBO heavyweight title in 1993. He made national news Thursday, Feb. 15, 1996, when he announced that he was HIV positive. He then retired from boxing. He was suspended from worldwide boxing when he tested positive prior to a boxing match against Arthur Weathers in Las Vegas. The suspension was lifted in 2006. He died September 1, 2013 of multiple organ failures.
