Roman Borisovich Gromadsky was born on December 18, 1940, in Leningrad, USSR (now St. Petersburg, Russia). From 1941-1943 he and his mother survived the siege of Leningrad during the Nazi occupation in the Second World War. After the war, Gromadsky lived on the Nevsky Prospect in Leningrad and was an active member of student drama club at his school. From 1958-1961 he served in the Red Army in East Germany and witnessed the rise of the Berlin Wall.
