He was born in civil servants family. As child went to Riga where 1937-1940 attended 1st gymnasium. In 1947 started work in Rigas Kinostudija as director's assistant working with directors Yuli Raizman', Pavel Armand' and Leonids Leimanis.First work as director dates from 1959. In Soviet regime movies 'piedod Dzimtene' and 'Cetri balti krekli' where severely censured but Piejuras klimats forbidden and only 40 minutes of this film survived.
