Robert M. Yost, son of Alice Kern (Yost) and Robert M. Yost and brother of writer Dorothy Yost, was educated in the public schools of St. Louis and attended Carthage College in Carthage, Illinois. Began his career as a reporter/writer for the St. Louis (Missouri) Post-Dispatch. Later, worked for the Los Angeles Examiner and then the Los Angeles Morning Herald and the Hearst syndicate services. In 1920, was named the Publicity Director for Fox West Coast Studios and, in early 1930, was appointed head of the scenario department for Fox. Left Fox shortly after the merger of Fox Film Corporation with Darryl F. Zanuck's Century Pictures.
