Neil became interested in acting in 1996 when he began attending an evening class run by Chris Martin, an actor & teacher whose credits included an appearance in Mike Leigh's first film Bleak Moments, in his hometown of Leicester. Neil started as an actor in amateur theatre but when he was made redundant from his factory job at the end of 1999, he decided to become a professional actor. Neil turned professional as an actor in 2000.
