Gustavo Hernández Pérez was born on Feb 21, 1974 in Venezuela. Gustavo Hernández Pérez's big-screen debut came with The Mexican Dream directed by Gustavo Hernández Pérez in 2003.

Born in Caracas, Gustavo majored in Mass Communications at the Universidad Central of Venezuela. Then he earned a Master's degree on Film Directing at the American Film Institute in Los Angeles, California. Gustavo believes in a cinema that simultaneously entertains and challenges an audience's expectations. "The Mexican dream", a short film he wrote and directed, has won 13 International Film Festivals in the U.S., Mexico, Chile, and Spain. Gustavo was honored with the AFI Franklin J. Schaffner Fellowship Award for Best Director of the Year, and The Directors Guild of America announced him as Best Latino Director at The 2003 DGA Student Film Awards. The Mexican Dream also became National Finalist at The 2003 Student Academy Awards, and was purchased by HBO and HBO/Cinemax Latin America for a programming rotation of two years.
