Beginning his career as a child actor, Gabriel Reid was "bitten by the bug" at an early age. Across diverse film, television and theatre projects, he has worked as an actor, writer, producer and director. His innovative work as a publicist, arts administrator and director was instrumental in establishing New Zealand Opera. Over many years servicing TVNZ and MediaWorks, he delivered high-end network indents and award-winning promos for flagship shows. His creative output has garnered Promax, Tropfest and Writers Guild awards and his short films have played at notable international festivals.Dr Reid secured his Ph.D. in Film Studies with a thesis examining the impact of digital technologies on screen production. He undertook research at Pixar, Industrial Light & Magic, Blue Sky Studios, Animal Logic and Weta Digital with interviewees including Jake Abraham, Andrew Adamson, Matt Aitken, Pete Docter, Bill George, Donald McAlpine, Barrie M. Osborne, Tim Johnson, Chris Wedge and Dean Wright. His M.A. thesis examined Shakespeare on screen. It was researched at the Royal Shakespeare Company, Royal National Theatre and Renaissance Films with such interviewees as John Barton, Hugh Cruttwell, Adrian Noble, Trevor Nunn, David Parfitt and Imogen Stubbs.At Unitec Institute of Technology, Dr Reid lectured on Film History. He served ten years on the board of the Directors and Editors Guild (DEGANZ), including two terms as VP. He has served five years on the board of Film Auckland (FAI).
