Fumiko Hayashi was born on Dec 31, 1903 in Japan. Fumiko Hayashi's big-screen debut came with Meshi directed by Mikio Naruse in 1951. Born 1904, daughter of a poor peddler. Went to school and did all sorts of trades to earn a living. Having lived in a continuous state of poverty, she attempted suicide on various occasions. Her first book was the autobiography _Horoki_ but it wasn't until the end of the war that she became widely known as a writer. By the time of her death, she had become the most popular writer in Japan.
