Colin and his twin brother Derek were born in Stobb Hill hospital in Glasgow, Scotland on the 5th of October 1956. He lived in Easterhouse, a large housing estate in Glasgow until his mother moved to Denny in Stirlingshire where she still lives today. When he was 16 he would "sneak off" to Edinburgh, where he performed on stage for the first time in a production of "The Boyfriend" at the Church Hill theater. In 1977 with $400 in his pocket he moved to Los Angeles to pursue an acting career. For the first couple of years he worked 8 to 5 office jobs during the day while doing theater at night. Finally he quit his job and began auditioning in Hollywood while working the odd day here and there in construction. It wasn't long before he was homeless. "It wasn't for long, but it was for real. LA's a tough gig, they don't make allowances and they don't take prisoners". It took a long time but he fought his way back. In 1993 he met his acting coach Charlie Laughton. He credits this meeting for the success he's having today. In September 2000 he returned to Scotland to work as an actor for the first time in nearly 25 years.
