Book editor Sarah Winston works and lives in solitude at home. She finds herself deeply lonesome following the death of her only friend Amy. Constantly, she checks her answering machine which never has any messages on it to be heard. In her state of "friendlessness", she alienates people right and left due to her unyielding obsessive and pedantic nature, which presents as a need to control everyone and everything around her. Sarah does not even read the stories in the manuscripts she edits, but rather fastidiously checks for grammar, punctuation and spelling. However, she does crave companionship on her terms. That need is increased when she spies a man to whom she is attracted from her window who she assumes attends regular meetings of some sort at the community center adjacent to her house. She decides to go to the center, and in the process gets sucked into a meeting in progress that she soon finds out is Alcoholics Anonymous (AA). After discovering what the meeting is all about, she has no intention of ever going back, despite the man, Charlie Manning's regular attendance. However, it is a bit too late because of the persuasive encouragement of people within the meeting who want to help Sarah overcome her "drinking problem" -- one of those people being Charlie's teen son, Kit. As Charlie and Sarah begin to date, Sarah slowly begin to soften, having Charlie and the other AA members in her life. However, their relationship is complicated, not only by the lie pertaining to the reason for Sarah being at the meetings which will necessarily have to come to light if they are to have a future as a couple, but other issues, not to mention some deep wounds, which have yet to be disclosed on both sides.
